Story under cut
Sunghoon and Y/N were known as the most toxic couple. Every time something got mentioned that they didn’t like it would set them off. You guys would argue nonstop, it’s all you guys ever did. You never truly got along anymore. Everything was perfect at the beginning, you would go on cute dates laugh and smile together but that all eventually faded away. One day everything just started going downhill you rarely talked to each other and when you did it was always fighting over something stupid. Sunghoon would state his opinion and you would get mad that he never had the same one anymore, and he didn’t play along with the “you’re always right” rule.
Your town was sick of the both of you, all of your friends would tell you to just break up with him if you guys argue this much. You didn’t want to because yeah you loved him, but you knew it had to be done. So you broke it off, it broke your heart and you’ve never felt so lonely until he left. It was like a piece of you was missing once he was gone. You regretted it so much and would think about all the ways you guys could’ve fixed your issues if you had only tried. But nevertheless it happened and you were trying to move on. And the best way to do that? Well one of your famous parties of course!
You always loved hosting parties, I mean it made you popular that’s for sure. You always knew the best way to throw a rager I mean you had your parents mansion after all. Usually ig takes you over a month to plan the whole thing out and chose a date. That’s when you found out your parents were out on business for the month. What better to do then begin the long setup process. So there you were planning out everything and telling all your friends that way they could invite others.
You start the setup process the day after your parents leave. You love decorating and buying all the supplies because it always gives you something to do. You go for simple but elegant, the elegant design helps to tie in the mansion’s exterior but you always let your guests wear what they like. Usually you see people in jeans and a t-shirt, but you, no you always go all out for you parties wearing the cutest of dresses. Once you had finished designing and decorating for the party you decided to pick out what you would wear. You go for a cute long black dress with a slit all the way up your leg. It’s sleeveless so you can dance all you want without getting hot. You pair it with a cute pair of gold heels to match along with your gold jewelry. You made sure your makeup looked perfect then headed downstairs to open your doors and wait for the arrival of guests.
Most of your guests came later in the night so the beginnings of the parties were always pretty chill, it was usually just you and your friends.
The clock had turned 11pm and finally people were starting to arrive. So you decided to actually get the party started setting up beer pong and various drinking games. After making sure your guest actually had stuff to do you sat with all your friends waiting for the party to get big enough. The blasting music was the perfect dancing mood so that’s what you did. As people were flooding in someone caught your eye, a very familiar face had entered. And it was none other than the Park Sunghoon, your ex. You noticed he had a new play toy with him. She was really pretty, I mean no one you’ve ever seen before. She was stunning, you felt like a speck of dust compared to her. You’re not surprised that she was dating Sunghoon though I mean he was really handsome, you yourself are surprised how you guys ended up dating at some point.
You felt so jealous, I mean you have your own reasons. Why is he here when this party is supposed to help you get over him. “Fuck, we only broke up two months ago and now he has this new bitch on his arm” you say to yourself whilst standing in the kitchen planning on getting a drink. You begin pouring yourself a drink as you stare them down forgetting to look away. This caused him to begin walking towards you with her. “I cannot be sober for this” you say in your head as you chug the drink you just poured, beginning to pour another.
“Hey Y/N, been awhile” he says meeting you in the kitchen. “Yeahhhh long time no see Sunghoon” you didn’t know what else to say I mean you did sound awkward and anyone should be able to pick up the tension in the room. “Yeah this is Kiana, my girlfriend” “ah I see, I see nice to meet you Kiana I’m Y/N” you say reaching your hand out. She ignores your handshake and says “Sunghoon I wanna go dance let’s go okay?”. Excuse me!? No way she just did that, that has to be one of the bitchiest things she could’ve done. “Okay baby, you head over first I’m gonna talk to Y/N for a second, I’ll be right over” he says to her putting a hand on her lower back to push her away. Luckily she complies and walks to the dance area. “Sorry for her she doesn’t like talking to anyone I know” he apologizes for her. “Huh weird, I thought she would’ve been more friendly I guess” saying as you chug down another cup. “Woah go easy Y/N the night is just beginning” “no thanks” you reply walking away from him.
You walk up to your friends who are currently smoking their heads off. You join them hoping to forget whatever just happened. After feeling like you’re on cloud 9 you head over to the dance floor. You start dancing and having the time of your life, I mean it feels like you are on another planet. Then you see them again she is dancing with and on him, and from what you see she’s really bad at it. So what to you think to do, dance to yourself and ignore her terrible dancing? Fuck no, you decide to show her who’s boss and what Sunghoon actually deserves, I mean you were together for a long time for a reason.
Walking up to them you push her out of the way whilst saying “move bitch, you suck at this let me show you how you actually turn him on”. You begin dancing on Sunghoon showing him a good time. You feel up and down his body and turn around to dance on him from the back, which he clearly likes since he’s using his hands to lead your hips. He’s feeling you up and down as you dance on him, obviously confident since you know you are doing way better than what’s-her-face over there. She sees how Sunghoon reacted to you and stormed off pissed. You couldn’t be happier that she’s gone now. Enjoying your time with Sunghoon as he feels up and down your body he says “oh how I missed you baby” you let out a whine at hearing that. You get more into what you’re doing and turn around to face him replying back with a “oh really?”. You smirk at him while you two dance together extremely close, I mean from an outside perspective you two look like you are gonna fuck any minute. You slowly back up from him and climb onto the table starting to dance up there feeling yourself. He looks up in awe as he watches you giving everyone a show.
Flowing to the music as you move your hands up and down your body. He finally pulls you down from the table bringing you close to him again. “God I really need you right now” he says to you holding you close. Of course since you’re not in your normal mind the way you respond to that is by kissing him. He kisses back and you guys are feasting on each other as if starved for years. He grabs your ass as you guys are making out. It was messy but oh, how you needed him again.
You drag him upstairs into your room. As soon as you enter and close the door he is back on you making out roughly and passionately. As if saying how much he really did miss you with needing words. He pushes you up against the door as he kisses down your neck biting every so often. You let out a moan at the feeling. He grumbles on your neck marking you up and down. “Mmm baby, glad to have you back” he mumbles against your skin. He lifts you up and carries you to your bed throwing you down on it, while he crawls on top of you, your lips connecting again. As you continue to make out, you hear a knock on the door. As you get up to open the door he says “baby just ignore it”. “I can’t Sunghoon what if it’s your girlfriend?” “And why would I care I have you I only needed her to get your attention and it worked so why do I need her anymore” he replies to your question. “I mean aren’t you hee raise you can’t just leave her” “she’ll be fine, Uber exists for a reason and if she’s that mad I can just venmo her or something” Sunghoon says getting up and grabbing your wrist to pull you back down. “Fine but if she’s mad it isn’t my fault, you’re staying the night correct?” “Of course baby, how could I leave you when I finally have you back?” He replies with a smirk. You giggle at the fact he said he can’t leave you after getting you back.
You and him lay down again and begin cuddling as he won’t do anything to you when you’re this drunk. He might be crazy but he’s not insane, he knows consent is a huge thing and is aware you can’t give that in your state. “How about we watch a movie then go to sleep?” You ask him with a smile. “Of course baby, anything you want”. You guys put on a movie as you both drift to sleep in each others arms.
You wake up with a pounding headache and an arm around your stomach. “Sunghoon?” You ask clearly remembering what you so happened to do last night, smacking yourself whilst you think about it. “Mmm good morning baby” Sunghoon grumbles out. “Lay back down I don’t want to get up yet” “fine only because I don’t think there is anyway I can get up without wanting to vomit”. You feel glad that he’s back missing his presence when he was gone. “I love you Sunghoon, I’m glad you’re back” you whisper to him part of you hoping he will hear. “I love you too Y/N I missed you more than anything” he say’s admitting that he heard you. You guys drift back to sleep with your love filling up the room.

EDIT: i forgot bucky cant get drunk. please pretend he can for my sake.
heavily inspired by love me more by byexbyez (aka the better written version of this trope, lol)
The soup you made earlier in the day had gone cold. Chicken noodle. It wasn’t your favorite, but your husband usually asks for it when you offer to cook. Your husband’s late again, but that wasn’t out of the ordinary. He was busy. He always is. Life as a congressman isn’t easy. It’s monotonous, boring, and soul-sucking. As much as the empty yet somewhat grand house bothered you, you learned to get over its suffocating hallways.
The sound of keys jingling in the door knob breaks you out of your little trance. The key sounds act as a little warning that someone’s coming in. Bucky enters quietly and he knocks off his shoes and removes his worn out tuxedo jacket and leaves on the coat hanger next to the door.
“Long day?” You ask. Bucky didn’t expect you to be up still, proven by the little jump he does when he hears your voice. He sighs, it’s just you.
“Yeah, when isn’t it?” He responds. You let out a light breath disguised as a laugh.
“Made soup. It’s a bit cold now, but I can go warm it up if you’d like.” You say as you start heading to the kitchen.
“I’m not that hungry.” Bucky replies. Bucky’s reluctance to eat made you bitter, however there was no use. Behind closed doors, there was no need for pretending. Bucky had asked you to sign that marriage license, however long ago, but there was no sentiment tied to it. It was simply a means to an end.
“You should eat Bucky. I’ll leave it out.” You respond, trying not to push too much. Bucky simply nods, a sign he’s not too interested in continuing chatting. At least when the topic is about him. Stage fright, maybe.
Bucky nervously fidgets with the cuff of his shirt. After a moment, Bucky lets out a deep breath and breaks his silence. “You’re gonna hate me.”
Your immediate reaction is anxiety. “What did you do?” You say, cocking your head slightly.
“There’s a charity event tomorrow.. ”
“Yeah, and?”
“I made a promise I would come.” Bucky says. What Bucky means to say is, ‘we would come’, but he thinks laying you into the news slowly will make your reaction easier to handle.
You would be fine with it, usually. You knew that these superficial galas and events came with Bucky’s profession. The only problem was that your mother was visiting the city for the day, and you had full-day plans for dinner and catching up. Bucky knew about them, as you told him the moment it was planned.
Your lack of a response was enough for Bucky. “I’m sorry. I know you have plans with your mother.” He says, apologetic enough to seem genuine.
“And I have to go?” You ask.
“It would look weird if you didn’t.” He responds. It’s always about looks, isn’t it?
“Right.” You reply, already planning out a long apology text to your mother, who would definitely understand. Can’t help but feel bad. You whip out your phone to start texting your mother.
“I’m buying a dress for you to wear tomorrow.” Bucky says, hoping that works as an incentive.
“Did you choose the dress, or did your secretary? You know I like her taste in fashion better.” You grin at Bucky for a second, then you look back down at your phone to begin typing your large paragraph of an apology.
“She helped.” Bucky laughs weakly. He can’t help but look at you frantically typing.
“Well, I’ll leave the soup out if you want it. You should eat something. ‘Gonna be a long day tomorrow too.” You say, finally, after you send your apology.
Bucky purses his lips and nods. “Okay. Thanks.” He says, so casually.
If anyone had seen how the two of you talk, they would assume you were roommates. Which you essentially were. The two of you weren’t very romantic, at least when the both of you were sober, or while you weren’t in the public eye, of course. Any non-public romantic passes were swiftly ignored the next day. It’s not that you didn’t find Bucky attractive, because you most certainly did, it was mainly the fact that Bucky made it clear from the beginning this relationship was strictly for political gain. Nothing really so hot and heavy about that.
“I’ll see you tomorrow morning then, Bucky.” You yawn as you head to your bedroom, which was a guest bedroom that Bucky randomly assigned you.
“See you. Be ready by 6PM.” Bucky tells you off-handedly. You give him a thumbs up as you walk to your room.
It’s hard for you to go to sleep, usually. It’s partially your fault. You know that being on your phone before bed isn’t best for getting the optimum amount of sleep. However, you find yourself researching your husband’s political moves every night. Bucky hasn't been able to pass a single bill since he joined Congress, so you note to yourself to avoid talking about that while at the event tomorrow. You hated studying in school, but yet you find yourself studying every night. You have to present yourself as a good wife, or at least a believable one.
You sigh, shutting off your phone after reading a large amount of hate comments on Bucky’s surprising political career. People don’t like change, or at least the fact that an ex-assassin somehow got into office. You shrug it off. Weirder stuff has happened, anyway.
You groan as you get out of bed. You accepted the fact you just weren’t going to get your desired hours of sleep tonight. Maybe it’ll be easier to go to bed after a glass of water?
You walk downstairs into the kitchen to get your glass of water. You enter to see Bucky, sitting with his laptop, with a bunch of paperwork splayed all over the kitchen island. Bucky hears the sounds of your footsteps, and he smiles at you weakly when he sees you. He’s tired, it’s clear by the look on his face.
You walk over next to Bucky, looking at all of his work. Just a bunch of political mumbo-jumbo; nothing of interest to you. You rub Bucky’s shoulder and neck, trying to massage what you can without seeming too touchy. Bucky groans a little, and he’s broken out of his little trance. He realizes just how tired he really is.
Bucky pats your hand on his shoulder and gently takes your hand off him. You’re not sure if that gesture was too affectionate. It shouldn’t be, but you can’t risk making anything awkward. “Thanks.” Bucky mumbles, his voice almost at a whisper. He rubs his eyes and yawns.
“You should go to sleep. You’ll work better after sleeping.” You tell Bucky, as you always do. You see an empty, used bowl. Bucky ate your food. You find yourself smiling.
“You like it?” You ask, heading towards the pot of soup that was sitting on the stove. You mix the soup around.
“It was perfect, thank you.” Bucky grins.
You grab a spoon and taste the soup you had made.
What the hell was Bucky talking about? It was the most watery, unflavorful soup you had made yet. And the soup you usually make is nowhere near gourmet. “What the hell are you talking about? This is ass.” You grimace at the taste.
Bucky grins and shrugs. “Tasted good to me.”
“HYDRA must’ve fucked you up bad.” You joke. Were HYDRA jokes too far? You were about to find out.
To your relief, Bucky let out a light laugh. “Guess they did. I’m just lucky that someone is willing to cook for me at all.”
You smile at Bucky, while continuing to stir the pot of soup. “It’s not a big deal. I’m glad you’re willing to eat it.” You say, while adding copious amounts of salt and herbs to make up for the lackluster taste.
After a moment, Bucky reveals, “I called your mom.”
You turn around. “You did?” You ask, looking a little concerned. Your mother didn’t know the true nature of you and Bucky’s real relationship. When you had told her the news, she was excited that her only daughter was getting married, but she was furious about the fact that she had never known about him before. Which is understandable. However, it wasn’t like you had much time before the fake marriage ceremony to introduce him.
You had asked for a wedding. With a nice dress. As a kid, you had always dreamed of having a perfect wedding, where most of the focus was just on you and your future partner. Bucky tried to deliver, but the wedding just didn’t feel complete. Probably from the lack of true feelings on either party, or the fact that you had to prepare for a new life under spotlight and public scrutiny soon.
The wedding you had was small, mainly just family and select friends. The only proof of the wedding’s existence was a photo you had taken with Bucky at the altar, along with the grotesque amount of photos your mother insisted on taking. You told her to keep the photos private, to which she begrudgingly agreed. All that, and yet the wedding also didn’t feel complete without Natasha there, as she was the woman who had introduced the two of you to one another many years ago.
It’s still weird Nat’s gone. You thank her for a lot of things. She provided you with your first job in the city. She convinced Tony that the Avengers needed a manager to handle all of their public appearances. She then convinced Tony that it should be you, and even with Tony’s unbearable stubbornness, she got you that job. It was there when you met Bucky, or the Winter Soldier, as he was named at the time.
“She wasn’t too mad about you canceling.” Bucky says about your mother, which knocks you out of your trance.
“She wasn’t? That’s a relief.” You respond.
“I’m still sorry that you had to cancel. I’ll make it up to you one day.” Bucky promises. While you’re sure Bucky means to keep the promise, he’s always so busy with work, so you wonder how long you’ll have to wait for Bucky to make it up to you — with whatever he plans to do.
“It’s fine, Bucky.” You shrug off as an instinct.
Bucky looks remorseful, but he doesn’t say anything more about it. “Good night then.”
“Night.”
In the morning, you wake up to an empty house. Bucky leaves for work early in the morning. You work from home – something you had wished for a while – but you have to admit, it gets pretty lonely. After a long day of pointless powerpoints and spreadsheets, you get a text from Bucky’s secretary.
“Mr. Barnes will be bringing your dress for tonight in 30 minutes.” She texts you, overly formal. You’ve told her that there’s no need to be formal, but she insists as she’s on the clock.
Bucky gently knocks on your door. You turn to see him with a box in his hands. “Surprise.”
You grin. “Wow, a present for me?” You say as you open the box. It’s a gorgeous white dress with gold accents. What a surprise – there’s no way Bucky picked this out himself.
“Mia.” Bucky mentions his secretary, notioning that it was her idea. You look up at him and nod. “Makes sense.”
You check your watch. 4:30PM. “I should start getting ready soon.”
“You’ll look good either way.” Bucky compliments, seeming more affectionate than it should. You clear your throat. “That’s kind of you, Bucky.”
“I’ll leave you to it.” Bucky says, leaving the box on your bed.
You say bye, as you start unfolding the dress. How the hell do you put this thing on? The dress had two strips of loose fabric, which were meant to be tied together in the back, similar to that of a halter top. At least you think they’re meant to be tied. You brace yourself to fit into this dress. You squeeze in a little, as the dress is a little tight in the back.
The dress was cute, from what you could see. The dress still needed to be tied, and there wasn’t a way for you to reach the back of the dress. You sigh a little as you try your best to make a knot. “Bucky?” You shout out.
“Yeah?” He calls out from downstairs.
“Can you come up?” You ask.
You can hear Bucky’s footsteps slowly come closer to your room. You turn around. The top of the dress folds over the waist of the dress. You turn around, your back facing the door, as your chest is exposed, and you’re not so keen on giving Bucky an unwanted surprise when he enters your room.
Bucky enters your room, surprised to see your torso exposed. He clears his throat and asks you what you need. You tell him to tie the back, instructing him on how to assemble the knot.
“Tie it tight.”
Bucky hums a little ‘mm-hm’. As he finishes the knot, you turn back around to show off the dress. “How does it look?”
Bucky grins a little. “Perfect.”
–
Later, you and Bucky enter the fancy ballroom. Charity events were a bore to you, as bad as that sounds. It always surprised you how much money people had to just give so freely, as you had grown up with so little. Perhaps it was best not to focus on that. It’s good that these people are donating so much for good causes.
Bucky had cleaned up, his hair was slicked back and he was in his best suit. Your hair was tied up and curled neatly. It had taken forever to do, so at least it turned out nicely. You accessorized with gold jewelry, to match with the gold accents of the dress, of course.
Bucky’s arm lays on the small of your back. Servers pass by with champagne and hors d'oeuvres, to which you pick up naturally.
Small talk between politicians killed you. You could not think of a bigger waste of time. You could feel the venom in each of the politicians' voices, but it’s hidden by smiles and charming personalities. You know what you have to do. Smile big, and only speak when spoken to. Best to avoid any slip-ups.
“You’re doing great, just focus on me.” Bucky whispers into your ear. You cough off the warm feeling in your chest.
“Congratulations on the wedding. Still in the honeymoon phase, are you?” A wife of a congressman asked.
“Very much so.” Bucky responded, looking at you with love in his eyes. He’s a good actor. You smile back as you place a hand on his chest.
“She gets me through my day.” Bucky adds, and a flurry of ‘aww’s’ follow suit. You swiftly push down the growing lump in your throat. Gotta act natural.
As you and Bucky break away from the group of people, you find yourself by the sidelines, people-watching. Bucky had left to go network, or whatever it is that he does. You had him in your line of sight, which comforted you in this large crowd.
You drink your champagne, unassuming.
“Mrs. Barnes?” A man asks out to you, seemingly out of nowhere. You jump a little at the surprise.
“Didn’t mean to scare you.” The man laughs as he slowly inches up to you. Your neck cranes upward to look at the man’s face, as he’s much taller than you.
“Of course not,” You grin, “You just caught me off guard.”
The man rubs the back of his neck. “My apologies.” You shrug it off.
“I was trying to reach Mr. Barnes, but he seems to be occupied.” The man sighs as he shoots a glance at Bucky.
“Am I just your next best option, then?” You ask, smiling.
The man turns back to you. “Of course not.” He insists with a charming smile. You’re quick to brush it off and assure him it’s alright.
“Benjamin Poindexter. Most people call me Dex.” He reaches his hand out with a grin. You tell him your name and shake his hand, his grip steady and firm.
“Am I allowed to call you Dex?”
“Call me whatever you like.” He says with a wink. You laugh. As your eyes wander back into the crowd, you see Bucky stare from across the ballroom. You notice that he isn’t paying full attention to the man he’s talking to. You pay no mind and go back to your conversation with Dex.
You invite Dex to people-watch with you, and it’s easy to convince him.
“These events are such a drag.” He mentions off-handedly. You let out a sigh of relief. “Aren’t they?” You respond, more enthusiastically than you have been this entire time at this gala.
“Just a huge flaunt of money.” Dex notes.
“It is. At least it’s for a good cause.” You try to reason.
“I’m sure they could do that without all the pointless attractions.” Dex sighs. You laugh as you stare at all the grand decor, live music, and grand meals. It’s true, this entire thing was just so obnoxious to you. “You get me.” You say.
Dex grins at you as he lightly places his hand on your shoulder. “At least you look lovely tonight.”
“Are you flirting with me, Dex? You know I’m a married woman.” You roll your eyes and grin, your eyes pointed towards the ground.
“Of course not,” Dex responds, “Unless you’d like me to.”
Your eyes widen at his boldness and laugh Dex’s advances off. “You’re funny.”
Dex doesn’t respond, his only response being the faint upward curling of his lips. Before you get to speak again, Bucky appears by your side.
“I’m sorry, could I steal my wife from you for a second?” Bucky says with a tight-lipped grin.
“Oh, of course-” Dex starts to say, only to be cut off by Bucky swiftly grabbing your hand and dragging you out of there.
“Oh, Bucky, Dex — or Benjamin — wanted to speak with you-” You try to say to your husband.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll get to that later.” Bucky says, not paying attention.
“Are you okay? What are you doing?” You whisper to Bucky once he fully removes you from Dex’s presence.
“How do you think I look when my wife’s too busy giggling with another man?” Bucky mutters into your ear. You pull back.
“It wasn’t like that-” You say, naively.
“Course it wasn’t,” He spits out, and a brief silence follows.
After taking a deep breath, Bucky says, “Just stick by me for the rest of the night, okay?”
You frown slightly, your face turning sour. “Right, okay.”
The rest of the night killed you. Every boring conversation felt even longer than it had before. It wasn’t helping that Bucky kept his grip on your waist tighter than usual. You counted down the seconds until this stupid gala was over, all with a big smile on your face.
You couldn’t ignore the looks Dex would shoot at you occasionally, but you didn’t let your gaze linger.
The car ride back home was quiet. You couldn’t tell if Bucky was still angry, his face was unreadable.
You two finally get back home, and the door shuts with a click. Bucky immediately lets out a deep sigh. You take that as a sign to initiate your go-to unwind routine, which usually consists of ordering Chinese and drinking. Hopefully Bucky will warm up to you again with some food in his stomach.
“Chinese?” You ask, waiting for Bucky’s go-ahead.
“Yeah. Sounds good.” Bucky says, his voice void of any emotion.
You fight the urge to ask Bucky if he’s still mad at you, best not to disturb the lion.
The ring of the doorbell notifies you that the takeout was finally here.
“So, talk to anyone interesting tonight?” You ask as you and Bucky sit down next to each other at your small dinner table.
“Never.” Bucky lets out a light breath of amusement. He watches you as you crack open wooden chopsticks for the both of you. You frown slightly at the uneven crack of the chopsticks.
As you hand over better separated chopsticks to Bucky, you stand up to grab drinks from the kitchen. “Beer?” You ask.
“Always.” He says as he chews on his noodles.
You grab a beer from the fridge, opening it up for Bucky. You grab a wine glass for yourself, pouring your favorite red wine into it.
As you hand over the beer to Bucky, he nods his head as a way of thanking you.
The dinner between the two of you is silent. Not that that’s necessarily weird, as you and Bucky have grown accustomed to uncomfortable silences.
“I’m sorry.” You apologize mindlessly. “For Dex.”
Bucky sighs as he finishes chewing his greasy noodles. “It’s fine. Just.. I don’t want anyone to suspect anything.” Bucky admits.
“Right.” You say, not putting up a fight. The idea of making Bucky angry makes your stomach bubble up in anxiety. You don’t want Bucky to smell your worry, so you bite your cheek to stifle it down.
— 13 YEARS EARLIER (POST CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER)
“He doesn’t talk a lot, but I think he just needs some time to readjust.” Natasha says as the both of you walk past the room of the new addition to the Avengers Tower. HYDRA had called him the Winter Soldier, but Steve calls him Bucky. Steve’s very adamant the rest of the Avengers (and also you) call him Bucky too.
It was your first week at your new job of being the Avenger’s manager. You’re still not sure how Natasha managed to snag this job for you, but it was better to not to question anything. You just couldn’t believe your luck.
Tony seemed apprehensive towards letting you in, but whether he liked it or not, the Avengers were becoming public figures, and they needed someone to manage their schedules. The rest of the Avengers didn’t seem to mind your presence; you were sure they had bigger things to worry about — like the state of the universe, for example.
Natasha had known you for at least a year prior to you moving to New York. She had saved you in an attack in your small hometown. You had no idea what she was doing in a small town like yours, but she had many secrets. You were just thankful she was in the right place and the right time.
As you and Natasha mindlessly tour the tower, you bump into a man much taller than you. It was Bucky.
“Oh— sorry about that.” You apologize instinctively.
Bucky looks at you bewildered. Well, you note that he kind of just always looks that way. It must be hard for him. You knew he was still fighting off the last bits of HYDRA’s brainwashing. It was best to just let him do his own thing, even if his hard stares felt like they were burning holes into your skin.
— PRESENT
You and Bucky finish eating the take-out noodles. They never get any less greasier. There’s spots of grease along Bucky’s mouth. You laugh and gesture to his mouth. “Got something on your face, Bucky.”
“Ah, shit—” Bucky groans as he tries to wipe it off with his hand. It’s unsuccessful, he’s just spread it around instead of getting rid of it.
“Here.” You say as you grab a napkin and start wiping his mouth for him. Bucky tilts his head up towards you as you hold his face. You wipe his lips, cheeks, and chin. You’re too focused on cleaning Bucky’s face that you don’t realize how flustered Bucky looks. “Done.”
You go to wash the oil off your hands in the kitchen sink. Bucky clears his throat to regain composure.
Little moments of soft domesticity like this make this makeshift marriage feel more real. Sometimes, it’s hard reminding yourself that it’s not.
“I should go to bed soon.” You note. You don’t want to end the night early, but you don’t want to seem too desperate for Bucky’s presence.
“Course. Right.” Bucky says. His lack of willingness to keep you around makes you frown. But you know there wasn’t anything to expect. At least it’s a guarantee that you’ll keep seeing him around.
The next morning, you wake up earlier than Bucky. It’s quite rare, knowing your sleep schedule. There’s sounds coming from Bucky’s bedroom. Muttered curses and frantic scribbling. You knock on his door. “Can I come in?”
Bucky looks at the door, his eyes tired. “Oh, yes, come in.”
He looked like a mess. He had fallen asleep at his desk. He was still wearing his suit from last night. That must’ve been uncomfortable, not to mention dirty. “Bucky— are you okay?” You ask, your eyebrows furrowing.
“Mmm, yeah. Perfect.” Bucky says as he stares at his endless pile of paperwork. You sigh as you turn Bucky towards you in his spinny-chair. “I have to go to work soon.” He yawns.
“Yeah, you do.” You respond. He wasn’t close to ready. “Come on, get up.”
Bucky doesn’t protest. He lets you drag him into his walk-in closet. There were a plethora of suits that all looked the same. You pick the first one you see, and shove it into Bucky’s hands. “Put those on.” You tell him as you turn around, to give him privacy.
Bucky does as you say, yawning as he does it. He would usually resist your attempts to help him, especially with tasks so mundane as this, but he was too tired to think. You grab a random necktie and wrap it around Bucky’s neck. Luckily for you, you had spent many hours studying on how to tie a necktie for the day of your wedding. You tie the necktie with swiftness. It’s a little lopsided, but it’ll do. You adjust his tie one last time, patting your hand on his chest as you finish. “Good.”
Bucky smiles weakly. “Thank you, I don’t think I could get anything done without you.”
You let out an amused breath. “I’m barely any help.” You say, as you pick up from stray clothes from off the floor.
Bucky softly smiles and shakes his head, while looking at the large mirror. “I’ll take all the help I can get.”
“When’s your next day off?”
“Tomorrow.”
“Good. You need the rest, Bucky.” You say. Bucky grins weakly, looking at the ground.
A pause.
“You know, I’m not sure what the hell I’m even doing.” He admits.
It sure was weird seeing Bucky open up. In the grander scheme of things, Bucky wasn’t being vulnerable at all. However, Bucky isn’t one to talk about himself — at all, really. Emotions made him feel antsy. Especially his own.
“Politics isn’t easy, Bucky. I’m sure you’ll grow into it.” You attempt to say some comforting words. You rub one of his shoulders to ground him, or something.
“No.” Bucky laughs lightly as he shakes his head. “I don’t know the first thing about this shit.” Bucky couldn’t admit that his whole sham of a political career was just a ploy to ethically inch himself towards Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Val was hiding something, and Bucky was going to figure it out. That didn’t mean his wife had to be dragged into this.
You purse your lips, unsure of what to say.
“Steve would know what to do.” Bucky sighs. Nowadays, Bucky hasn’t mentioned Steve as much as he used to, but that didn’t mean he never stopped thinking about him.
— 4 YEARS AGO (POST ENDGAME)
There wasn’t much noise from the Avengers anymore. Everyone had gone their own way, feeling lost after the loss of Tony, Natasha, and Steve. You feel sick to your stomach whenever you think about Natasha. Your friend, gone just like that — all for some stupid orange stone. You couldn’t bear to see Clint, his grief clouded him and invaded the space to those around him. You wish you could help him, but you couldn’t even help yourself. You're just grateful Clint at least has his loving family around him.
As you walk around Central Park, you see a familiar face. Bucky. His metal arm stuck out like a sore thumb. The two of you had become acquaintances, and maybe even friends? You could never read him. You also hadn’t talked to him in a while, as he was too busy helping save the fate of the universe. You know, the usual. As you walk up to him, you tap his shoulder and ask, “This spot open?”
Bucky looks up at you and grins weakly. He says your name and scoots on the bench to invite you in.
“How are you holding up?” You ask a dumb question. Everyone was grieving.
“Fine.” Bucky lies. You lean back on the bench.
“Wish I could say the same. I don’t really know what to do with myself.” You laugh, awkwardly.
“Yeah. Same.” Bucky says, seemingly distant.
You and Bucky sit in the silence for a second. “Talked to anyone recently?” You ask.
“Saw Sam a couple of days ago. He’s really busy right now.” Bucky sighs.
“How’s he?”
“Stressed. Steve giving him the shield really put a lot of pressure on him.”
“Can’t imagine what he’s feeling right now.”
There’s another awkward silence as your topic of discussion runs its course.
That’s when you had an idea. You two shouldn’t have to continue living in limbo. You were gonna ask Bucky to hang out, so the both of you guys could be less alone together. Innocent and easy, yeah?
“Let’s get drinks, Bucky.” You ask. He seems confused, but anything sounds better than rocking himself to sleep.
“Really?”
“Why not? I’ve been sitting around for weeks. Steve and Nat would want us to keep living, don’t you think?” You reason.
“I think you’re right. That sounds good.” He says as he gives a small grin.
You get up from the bench and give a hand to Bucky, “C’mon, I know a place.”
Hours passed by, and the night didn’t go quite as well as you planned. You heavily underestimated how much alcohol you could tolerate, as you hadn’t drank in quite some time, and Bucky got carried away trying to drown out his sorrows. Luckily, you could still control yourself, at least when you really focus.
You managed to call an Uber to your apartment. Bucky wraps his arm around you as the two of you stumble into your house. Bucky was sure to regret everything tomorrow morning. But for now, he took his chance to let down his inhibitions and connect with someone else. Bucky hadn’t stopped talking about Steve, which was fine, since you just replied with your own grief about Natasha. The two of you flop on your couch.
“Can’t believe he’s really gone.” He hiccups. “Me neither.”
“He was the greatest.” Bucky mumbles as he lays his head on your couch.
“Natasha was so kind.” You mumble.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do.” Bucky says.
You look at Bucky, his eyes low and fluttery. His lashes look beautiful as Bucky blinks. You sigh as you continue to peer into Bucky’s soul. Bucky would normally feel exposed, but he feels a sense of company he hasn’t felt in a long time. “Me neither.” You say.
There’s a lingering silence. Steve and Nat wouldn’t want the both of you guys drinking yourselves to death over them. The two of you knew that, but it was easier said than done.
“I just feel so alone.” Bucky says as he looks at you. You grab Bucky’s hand, squeezing it tight. You’re unsure of what to say. You should say something comforting, but you feel the same. You feel the same agonizing isolation he feels. You muster up something somewhat comforting to say. “I’m here, you’re not alone.” You say. You wish emotional maturity didn’t feel and sound as corny as it did.
Bucky looks at you. It’s softer than the gaze he would look at you with when the two of you met first at the Avengers Tower. He breathes slowly before he says, “I’m sorry.”
Bucky cups your jaw, and inches himself closer to you. He places a kiss on your mouth. You back away from him a second. He curses to himself, did he mess it up? Maybe he misread the bonding experience the two of you both shared. Maybe you didn’t feel as alone as him, or maybe you didn’t need this as much as he did.
You lean back in, kissing Bucky roughly. Your mouths morphed into one. Quick breaths are taken in between kisses. It was as if kissing was your life-line, and if either one of you were to break it, you would die. Your nose was pressed so hard against Bucky’s face, it felt as though it could break. Your hands were clasped around Bucky’s jaw, your fingers spilling onto his neck. You could feel his heartbeat thunder against his throat. His face was scruffy from his stubble. He felt rough in your hands.
As you break away from the kiss, the both of you take deep gasps of air. Bucky doesn’t seem to mind, as he pins his focus on your cheek and jaw. He peppers kisses all along your cheekbones, nose, jaw, and neck.
“Jesus, Bucky..” You whisper out.
The night continues, and you wake up the next morning with you and Bucky’s clothes scattered all over your bedroom floor. Your head felt like it could pop. You felt nauseous as you propped yourself up in your bed. Your twin XL bed wasn’t enough space for you and Bucky. He was nearly falling off the side. You still had enough memories from last night, thankfully. You weren’t sure how Bucky was going to react to it. Shit, maybe this was a bad idea.
— PRESENT
You and your mother had re-planned your previous plans. Your mother was a kind break from the rest of the things on your mind. As you and your mother sat at an outside table outside a quaint little cafe, she let out a little sigh as she looked at you.
“You know, the rest of the family still wants to meet him.” She mentions Bucky.
You loved your mother, but you didn’t love her nagging. “Yeah. Yeah. They’ll meet him soon.”
“You always say that.” Your mother says, as she takes a sip of her coffee. You sigh as you ignore your mother.
After a moment, you finally respond. “I sent them our wedding photos. Surely that’ll hold them over for now.”
“They’re all so nosy. They want to meet him in person.”
You frown. “Bucky’s shy. It’ll happen eventually, mom — trust me.”
“Whatever you say.”
Your apprehension for having Bucky meet your family was understandable. Your family was a lot to deal with, as with every family, you assume. You were scared that Bucky would get scared. You’re not worried about Bucky leaving you over anything, as you were safe as long as Bucky was still a congressman with a ‘family-man’ reputation to uphold. The possibility of Bucky leaving after his term ended made you feel uneasy. Hopefully he likes you enough to keep you around.
— A YEAR AGO (PRE THUNDERBOLTS*)
Bucky had called you to meet him at a nearby bar where he was at the moment. Bucky and you had become proper friends. Friends who don’t really talk about that time they hooked up approximately 3 years ago. You had heard whispers from people of Bucky’s potential political career. Of course, it didn’t make sense to you. But you weren’t one to discourage one from their goals.
You walk into the dingy bar, and wave to Bucky. “How are you, Bucky?” You say as you sit in the seat next to him, making small talk.
“Fine. As good as I can be.” Bucky shrugs, his beer hanging loosely in his hands. You order your usual drink, and Bucky tells the bartender to put it on his tab. Always the gentleman.
“So, what’d you call me for?” You ask.
“Good company. I don’t need an excuse to see you, do I?”
“Course not, Buck — Just didn’t expect it.” You say. You’re always the one who asks Bucky to hangout. The bartender hands you your drink. You thank them swiftly and look back to Bucky.
“It’s good seeing you, really.” Bucky says.
“Is it?”
“Don’t make me repeat myself,” Bucky laughs lightly. “You’re a good break from politics.”
“What are you even doing in politics, anyway?”
Bucky groans. “It’s all for public image, really,” He admits. “Wanna do some good out there, you know. It’ll help the public like me after my whole ‘Winter Soldier’ thing. You know.”
“I think you helping to save the universe did enough for your public perception.”
“People don’t like to forget the past.”
“Fair.”
Of course, Bucky didn’t mention Val. No reason to drag his friend into his ploy. The night went on, and you and Bucky continued catching up. You made sure not to overdrink, only feeling a little looser now than when you walked through the bar doors.
“People don’t really believe my whole campaign. My manager has been saying I need to make my reputation look better.” Bucky mumbles to you.
“How?”
“Well, he suggested I make myself look more family-oriented. Married with kids, and all that.”
You smile as you laugh into your drink. “Good luck with that.” You turn to Bucky silently observing you. His gaze makes you feel exposed. “Something on my face?”
“No, sorry. Just thinking.”
“Whatever you say, Bucky.”
You and Bucky walk out the bar; quite put together, thankfully. You tighten your grip around the handle of your shoulder purse. “Well, it was nice seeing you.”
“Course, you too.” Bucky says as you tap your phone, trying to find yourself an Uber.
“Wait.”
“Hm?”
Bucky cleared his throat, looking nervous and antsy. “You can say no. This is going to sound crazy.”
You furrowed your brows and smiled, timid. “What? Just say it, Bucky, you’re making me nervous.”
“You can say no.”
“Just fucking say it, Bucky.”
“Fine.” Bucky says. He still takes a moment to collect himself, his heartbeat beating out of his chest.
“Would you consider marrying me?” Bucky finally musters the courage to ask.
You stared at Bucky, your anxious grin still not leaving your face. He’s right, he does sound crazy.
“What are you talking about, Bucky?” You laugh as you shake your head.
“If I asked you, would you marry me?” Bucky repeats himself.
“You’re drunk.” You laugh off his question, awkwardly.
“You know how I am when I’m drunk.”
“You being sober doesn’t normally include you proposing.”
“You can say no.”
“Why are you even asking me that?”
Bucky flicks his fingers in anxiety. He asked out of desperation, the pressures of appearing family-oriented to the public weighed on him. Also, the fact you were previously the manager for the Avengers could also help with his public perception bullshit. You being attractive also helped. He wouldn’t say that out loud though, he had class.
“Doesn’t have to be real. Just has to look it.” Bucky says. “You can do your own thing, I can do mine.”
“This for your politics?” You guess correctly, rubbing your forehead.
Bucky sighs. “Yeah.”
“I’m not sure, Bucky.. This is a lot to ask—” You say, before getting cut off by Bucky.
“Just think about it. You can say no.“
You bite your bottom lip. “I’ll think about it.”
It’s been a few days since Bucky asked you to marry him. You hadn’t texted him since, being too scared to do so. Bucky beats himself over it. He was sure he messed up a good friendship for something so stupid; of course you’d say no. What was he thinking?
You walk back into your dark, empty apartment. The dishes you had refused to wash piled in your sink. It’s eerily silent. And cold. Your landlord was neglectful, proven by your heater that had been broken for weeks. You made up for the cold by buying more blankets. You couldn’t buy another portable heater just yet, you were late on last month’s rent. You were trying to find work after being blipped and after the Avenger’s disbanded.
You groan, your head laying back on the edge of the couch. Bucky’s offer didn’t sound so crazy. You’ve been to Bucky’s house a couple of times. A proper heater and A/C sounded more and more appealing. Not worrying about how you’re going to pay rent sounded more and more appealing. Not being so alone sounded appealing as well.
In your moment of desperation, you text Bucky back. “Okay. I’ll do it.”
— A WEEK AGO FROM PRESENT DAY
You were busy wiping the countertops as Bucky came back home. Bucky didn’t drink as much as he used to. You were surprised to smell alcohol off of Bucky’s clothes.
“I’m home.” Bucky calls out as he drops his bag down on the floor.
“Bucky.” You grin. You were happy that the house wasn’t going to feel as daunting as it did when you were alone. Bucky’s good company, whether or not you liked to admit it.
Bucky smiles at you. The smell of alcohol invaded your nostrils. “You drank?”
“Only a few drinks. One or two. Maybe three.” Bucky says. You roll your eyes, smiling softly.
“Jesus, Buck.”
“I’m not drunk.”
“Sure you aren’t.”
“Not.” Bucky says as he sits on the couch.
“Need anything? We got some leftovers, if you’d like.” You offer. Bucky looks back at you, tempted. You heat up food for him, and hand it to him carefully. “It’s hot, be careful.”
“What would I do without you?” Bucky says with his mouth stuffed with food.
“Probably die.” You say, as you pick off food from his face. Bucky giggles. “Yeah. Probably.”
Bucky brings his plate to the sink and starts to wash it. You attempted to do it for him, but Bucky insisted. He wanted to prove he didn’t need your help with everything — not that he really minded the help.
Bucky comes back to the couch. Later, he’s mindlessly watching TV as you’re attempting to read the book you promised to finish about 3 months earlier. His hot body lays on top of you. Like a custom heated, weighted blanket. Bucky’s hot body clashes with his abnormally cold metal arm. You’ve usually found yourself placing your hands on top of Bucky’s arm, as to cool your hands that are always hot. You and Bucky have formed your own mutualistic relationship. In terms of body heat.
The walls Bucky usually has up are lowered, thanks to the alcohol. He gently inches closer to you, resting his head on you. You smile softly. He’s usually like this when he’s a little tipsy. You can’t blame him, you know a lot of touchy drunks. You gently play with the ends of his long hair. Bucky nearly purrs from the soft sensation. He’s like a cat in your touch.
You lay on the couch, to which Bucky adapts and lays on your stomach, his arms wrapped around you. How silly. You continue brushing your hands through his scalp. The soft companionship makes you feel warm inside.
You had finished about 30 pages of your book when you realized that Bucky hadn’t spoken or moved much in a while. He had fallen asleep on you. You laugh as you look at the large man on you. It was a funny sight, for sure. You go back to reading your book. Reading usually makes you sleepy, though. It’s not a surprise that you fall asleep not too soon after.
— PRESENT
You fidget with the ring on your finger. It was a plain, gold band. You didn’t want to run through Bucky’s pockets when trying to pick out a ring. It would be nice to have a pretty ring, though. Bucky was going to come back home anytime now. He texted you that he was going to pick up food on the way back. You had nothing to do, no more work for the day and no food to cook for someone. It felt weird, but you tuned out the little itch in your head to be useful by mindlessly doom scrolling.
Bucky opens the door with his keys. He groans as he knocks off his shoes and takes off his jacket.
“What’d you get us?” You ask, from the couch.
“Thai.” Bucky mumbles as he lifts up the large bag to show you. He sounds tired.
“Oh, my favorite.” You say as you grab the large takeout bag from Bucky’s hands. You place the bag on the dinner table, and rush to grab cutlery for the two of you.
“Actually.. I think I’m gonna eat alone.” Bucky says as he grabs his food and laptop to bring to his room.
“Oh. Okay.” You say, disappointed. You don’t want to shove your company onto Bucky, so you just agree. Compliant wife, or whatever. Bucky didn’t stay long, he immediately headed towards his room. Did you do something wrong? Why was being like this?
After Bucky had got up and left for his room, you grabbed your portion of the food and brought it towards the coffee table in front of the TV. Eating alone while watching TV reminded you too much of your life before you decided to “marry” Bucky.
After approximately 30 minutes, Bucky walks out his bedroom, with his takeout trash in his hands. You get up, walking towards Bucky. “I can get that!” You say, desperately trying to help out.
“Oh—” Bucky says, surprised.
“You need anything, Buck? I can go fill up the tub, or clean your room. Ugh, I’m sorry I didn’t clean before, I really should’ve, that’s on me—” You ramble. Bucky cuts you off by saying your name.
“Stop. It’s.. it’s fine.” Bucky says, looking overwhelmed and overstimulated. You bite back a whimper as you nod your head. You so desperately want to be a helping hand, and yet now, you just feel like an overwhelming burden. “Sorry.”
Bucky purses his lips. “I’m just going to go to bed.” He says, as he throws his trash away by himself.
“Right. Okay. Goodnight.”
The next day, you stay at your friend’s place. You had the day off, and you thought it was best to spend the day with someone that wasn’t Bucky. Or your mom. During the day, you think back to how Bucky was last night. He has a lot on his plate. Maybe you really were being too much. As much as you didn’t wish for it to happen, you couldn’t stop thinking about Bucky.
The idea that you had planted into your own brain, the idea that Bucky might leave you after his term ends, haunted you. It seemed silly. He wouldn’t just leave, right? Well... there’s been no signs that Bucky would necessarily stay. He wasn’t obligated to, and neither were you. You wouldn’t leave, though. You’ve grown accustomed to your new life with Bucky. Bucky on the other hand, might want to return to his life of peace and quiet he had before he married you. God, this whole thing made you feel sick.
Your friend had seemed worried about you, but you were adamant you were fine. You didn’t allow her to worry about you. Nothing for her to worry about, after all.
It was late at night when you returned home. Using the keys Bucky gave you, you tried to enter as quietly as you could.
Bucky’s at the dinner table, looking concerned. He eases once he sees you.
“Where have you been?” He asks, standing from his chair.
“At a friend’s place.” You tell him. The conversation sends you flashbacks to your teenage years; when your parents would be worried sick about your whereabouts. Is this what your relationship with Bucky has amounted to? Some kind of parental relationship?
“You should’ve texted me.”
“Right.”
“I’m being serious.”
You feel uneasy, and also annoyed. Why the hell did Bucky care? You two weren’t actually together. Roommates don’t have to always know where the other one is. That doesn’t change with Bucky — who’s basically your glorified roommate.
“Sure.” You mumble.
Bucky glares at you. “What the hell’s your problem?” He asks. You don’t get into fights with Bucky often. Fighting also makes you anxious. Perfect combo for you.
“Nothing, Bucky.” You say, as you hang your bag and outdoor clothes on the nearby hangers.
“Obviously there’s something bothering you. Just spit it out.”
You roll your eyes, which makes Bucky’s jaw clench. Bucky doesn’t need to pretend he cares. “Let’s just leave this alone.” You say, as you try to head to the bathroom, to freshen up before going to bed.
“No. What’s going on with you?” Bucky says, as he grabs your arm, holding you back.
You stare at Bucky, taken back by his audacity. “Fine.”
Bucky drags you to the couch. The place where a week ago, you were sure Bucky and you had a proper, domestic moment. Maybe he didn’t think much of it. He was tipsy, after all. Would Bucky still want to be tender with you if he didn’t have a couple drinks in him? Did you sicken him that much?
“Why have you been avoiding me? Did I do something? Please— just tell me.” Bucky pleads, hints of worry speckled in his soft, blue eyes.
Being vulnerable never came easy to you. The feeling of burdening others with your mundane emotions made you feel sick. Feelings of anxiety bubbled from your stomach to your chest.
“I.. haven’t been avoiding you—” You say, before you’re swiftly cut off.
“You have been. I’ve texted you multiple times today.” Bucky says, matter-of-factly. You clear your throat, feeling too exposed.
“Okay, well..” You find yourself trailing off again.
“Jesus Christ.” Bucky says, while also saying your name, distressed. “Just fucking say it.”
Bucky’s attitude was out of control. You scoff with your eyebrows furrowed, staring holes into Bucky.
“Stop fucking doing that.” You say, biting your bottom lip in uneasiness.
“I will if you just fucking let me know what’s been up with you.”
“Fine! Fine.” You say, trying to sort your thoughts. How much are you willing to expose to Bucky? Are you really willing to spill to him that you actually do like him? Well, not that you’re like, in love with him or anything, but the idea you’ve planted in your head that Bucky might choose to leave you after he leaves his failing career in politics lingered in your brain. Shit, who were you kidding. You were in love with Bucky. You were in love with Bucky and it was eating you up alive. You’re not used to being so open. It feels so invasive.
“You can tell me anything.” Bucky attempts to be comforting, but he’s unsure of its effectiveness. He grabs your hands, and rubs loving circles with his thumbs. How unfair.
“You know, it’s stupid..” You say.
“Not stupid.” Bucky responds.
“I was just mad.. That you seemed distant. Last night.” You let out.
Bucky lets out a deep breath. “Right.”
“It’s stupid. It’s not like you always have to be around me.” You try to explain, but Bucky cuts you off short.
“No. It makes sense. I’ve been really stressed out recently.”
“No, no, right, right. That makes sense. I told you, it’s stupid.” You find yourself rambling over Bucky again. Bucky cuts you off by saying your name yet again.
“Stop. Breathe. It’s fine, really.”
You take a deep breath in. It makes you feel less like you’re about to pass out, but the antsiness never leaves your chest. Bucky places a hand on your knee that had been bouncing like crazy. You didn’t even realize it was shaking.
“Well, that can’t be it, right?” Bucky urges you to continue. You pick at your ring, a tic you’ve picked up on during the last couple of months.
“I just.. feel-like-a-burden-to-you.” You say quickly, hoping the faster you say it, the faster this whole conversation will end.
Bucky furrows his eyebrows. He looks almost.. hurt? “Why would you think that?” He says, almost too lovingly. What a considerate asshole.
“I just.. I know I overwhelm you. I just want to feel useful. Make you feel like you didn’t make a mistake in choosing me as your fake wife.”
“I fully knew what I was doing when I asked you.”
“I can’t help it.”
“You don’t have to prove anything to me.” Bucky says, quietly.
You fight back the urge to say, ‘You’re just saying that.’ He was just being nice. God, you hate that he managed to fish all this out of you. You felt so bare. Bucky knocks you out of your trance by saying your name.
“Look at me, okay? You don’t have to prove anything to me.” He says, with a face too genuine it makes your stomach churn. You spin your ring around your finger. How easy would it be to just give it back to him? He’s just gonna leave you anyway when he decides to leave politics.
“You should have this back.” You say, gesturing to the ring. You didn’t mean to be so dramatic in the way you decided to hand back Bucky his ring. Just fell out that way.
“What are you doing?” Bucky asks, looking bewildered.
“You shouldn’t feel obligated to keep being with me even after your term ends. This whole thing was to appear family-oriented to the public, right? So, when you’re done, you should be able to do your own thing. I don’t want to hold you back.” You let the words flow out your mouth. While it did make you feel like a burden had been lifted off your shoulders, with the way Bucky looked at you, it didn’t do much for making you feel any better.
“What?”
You sigh, biting your lip. Little droplets of blood bead at your lip from where you bit. You wipe it away, hoping Bucky doesn’t overanalyze how you’re acting.
“You should be able to meet someone else, you know. Someone you actually want to spend the rest of your life with. You don’t have to do this whole charity thing, you know.”
“Charity?” Bucky repeats, baffled. “Is that what you think?”
“You know, I’m surprised you hadn’t seen anyone during the time we were together. Missed opportunity, I think.”
“Jesus,” Bucky says, his words tinged with a slight tone of disappointment. You hate the way it makes you feel.
Bucky’s quiet for a moment, but you could tell small bits of anger was boiling inside him.
“That why you were so close and personal with that fucking guy— what was his name.. Dex? You thought I was out here, doing the same shit?” Bucky says, his jealousy reaching his throat, choking on his own words.
“I..” You struggle to find the words. “I wasn’t doing anything with that guy.”
“You know, the way you looked at him made me feel fucking sick. Jesus, I’d never want anyone to feel the way I felt then.”
“Jesus— Bucky, you’re making me sound like some kind of monster.” You scoff.
“And you’re making me sound any better?” Bucky retorts. Bucky’s words make you choke up on your own. “You make it seem I was just trying to use you.. Like I don’t appreciate you, at all.”
“Which isn’t true.” Bucky adds, at the last second.
You groan, sinking into the couch. It would be convenient if the couch swallowed you whole, right about now. It would save you the trouble.
“Talk to me.” Bucky pleaded, again. His eyes were glued onto you. His fleshy hand felt clammy.
“You’re going to hate me.” You mumble. “I could never.”
You take a deep breath in, trying to compose yourself the best you can. You’re so anxious, you can barely find the words you want to use.
“God.” You say.
“I fucking love you, okay? As if it’s not glaringly obvious. Fuck.” You say, to Bucky’s surprise. “I want to feel helpful, I want you to want me around you, and I want you to want me the way I want you.” You say, truthful, for once.
Bucky doesn’t know what to say. Well, he’s happy, of course. Thrilled, one could say. He didn’t want to jump at his chance to be with you so fast, out of fear of looking starved and desperate. But life was too short to worry about how he was perceived. His grin spread from cheek to cheek. You didn’t know if that was necessarily a good thing or a bad thing. His stupid, beautiful fucking face shone at you.
“Say something. I feel like I’m gonna vomit.” You say quietly.
“Jesus Christ. You know how long I’ve been waiting to hear that shit?” Bucky says before he clasps your face, bringing you towards his face with a clash. Bucky kisses you like he did that one night many years ago. But yet, now, it’s more caring. More careful. You melt like a puddle in his hands. This is everything you wanted, but your fear of underperforming haunts you.
“Just let me guide you.” Bucky breathes out, saying the perfect thing. It’s like he could read you. He knew you through and through. Bucky’s tongue slips into your mouth with ease. He lovingly kisses your top and bottom lip. He did exactly what you needed. He guided you through it.
Bucky grabs you by your thighs, lifting you up and taking you to his bedroom. He mindlessly opens the door. He’s too busy being engrossed by your presence. It’s intoxicating. Bucky feels his way through his room. He lays you gently on the side of his bed.
“Fuck.” He whispers out, as he grabs the side of your face, lifting your gaze up to reach his. You looked so beautiful under his touch, and he was dedicated to making you never doubt how much you mean to him again.
Bucky sits beside you, shoving his mouth on yours again. His tongue follows down the path of your throat. His hands slowly graze the sides of your thighs. You felt soft in his hands. It made him feel insane. Bucky let out small praises, whispers of ‘So gorgeous’ and, ‘I needed this’ exit his mouth. You took your hand, the hand that wasn’t clasped around Bucky’s face, and palmed at Bucky’s unmistakable boner. Bucky lets out a deep groan. “Jesus.”
Bucky reacts by swiftly removing your top, still kissing you. He was desperate to see you. You unbuckled Bucky’s belt, and unbuttoned his pants. “Tell me what you need.” Bucky says.
You laughed into the kiss. You felt the growing knot in your stomach expand. You needed Bucky as much as he wanted you. “I want to sit on your face, Bucky.”
“Course you do.” Bucky responds, as he pulls off your clothes. Bucky lifts you over him, so you’re straddling his chest. It was embarrassing, having Bucky feel the growing wet spot from your core on his skin. You couldn’t really think much of it though, you had bigger things to think about right now.
Bucky adjusts himself just perfectly under you, his eyes looking at you, filled with lust and care. You fall forward on the headboard of the bed; the first touch from Bucky’s tongue on your pussy making you reel forward.
Bucky was an animal. His tongue drove into you like a machine. He would spend time easing you into it, but he was selfish. He needed you, and guessing from the sounds you’re making, you needed him too.
“Fuck— Oh my god!” You moan out.
You rest your arms over top of the headboard for support. You leaned your head on top of your arms, only making the bottom of your face visible to Bucky. He reaches his hand towards your chest and pushes you back, notioning that he wants the full view.
“Fuck. Fuck, Bucky— I…” You whisper out as you lean your arms back to support yourself on Bucky’s torso. Your boobs jiggle over Bucky’s face in a mesmerizing way. Bucky wrapped his lips around your clit, sucking on it. You’re so wet already, it’s proven by the ridiculous sounds Bucky’s mouth is making while eating you up.
As you inch closer and closer to your high, you’re cut off by Bucky’s frantic slapping on your thigh. You get up from off of him immediately, to which he gasps in a big breath of air. He was nearly drowning in your pussy. Which, honestly, Bucky wouldn’t mind it if that’s how he was going to go. His mouth is filled with remnants of your arousal, to which he swallows easily. There’s even some in his nostrils. Jesus. How fucking grotesque.
“You’re gonna kill me, darling.” Bucky laughs out. “You’re gonna kill me first.” You breathe out.
Bucky grins as he grabs you and flips you on your stomach with ease. He takes off his boxers as quickly as he can, eager to feel you. The cold feel of the blankets and pillows is a nice contrast to how hot your body feels against Bucky. Bucky grabs your ass, lifting it up as his erection springs out his boxers.
The first thrust into you feels like heaven. Bucky fills you up, and your pussy stretches around him. Bucky swears this is heaven. Bucky pounds into you with ease, the bed shakes under the two of you.
“So good. Oh my god—” You manage to say out loud. Bucky leans over you, reaching his fingers to your sensitive clit. The sensation is nearly too much. Your eyes roll back into your head, and you’re only a little glad that Bucky can’t see just how much of a mess he’s making you.
“Jesus, baby. You’re being so good for me.” Bucky mumbles lazily. He’s becoming nearly undone. He feels as though he could cum any moment now. “Taking it so well, yeah?” Bucky asks.
The only answer you could give him was a nearly inaudible, “Mm-hm.”
Bucky laughs. He slowly envelops his hands with fistfuls of your hair. He pulls your head back to look at him. You have one hand on the bed, one hand on the headboard. Your eyes peered all the way back at Bucky. “Tell me, tell me how good you’re being for me.”
“I’m.. fuck, I’m being good for you, Bucky.” You mumble out, mindlessly. Bucky loved seeing you come undone by him. Made him feel good. You feel tears prick up in your eyes from the overwhelming sensation. You can’t keep holding on for much longer, your high was near. Pathetic moans exit your mouth repeatedly. You were gasping for air, and you bit on your bottom lip to help you deal with the pleasure consuming you. Bucky thrusts get sloppier and more inconsistent, the closer he gets to his own release.
Bucky continued pounding into you. “Do you even remember that fucking loser’s name?” He groans out, mentioning Dex. To be fair, you weren’t far from forgetting your own name. You shake your head no rapidly. “I don’t— I don’t remember his name.” You babble out.
“Good. God, you’re so good under me.”
“Oh my— gonna, gonna cum, Bucky.”
“Cum, please— oh my god.” Bucky begs you, his mind getting too clouded by his own pleasure.
You do what he asks of you. You cum around his cock, and he revels in the sensation. He fucks you through the high, which nearly makes you scream out. Bucky had already planned on leaving this stupid politician shit behind him. But seeing you like this, all fucked out for him, was the icing on the cake. He could have you like this all the time, with no shitty and pointless job to hold him back.
“Cum inside of me.” You beg, desperate. Bucky bites back a guttural moan from that. His thrusts are becoming incredibly sloppy. He does as you ask of him, and cums inside of you. The feeling drives you insane. Bucky falls on top of you, the weight of him crushing you. Bucky rolls off of you, his breath shaky and uneven. Bucky presses hot kisses on your back and neck.
After a moment of recovery, you turn to Bucky, giggling. You felt safe with Bucky. Bucky wrapped his arms around you, kissing your head softly.
“Still think I’m gonna leave you?” Bucky asks, his tone light.
“Jesus fucking Christ, Bucky— Shut the fuck up.”

PnF Spirit Week 1: May 27th - Pets
You never really forget your first ever pet. Especially if they disappear quite abruptly from your life.
#pnf#phineas and ferb#pnfspiritweek#candace flynn#perry the platypus#bucky#bucky the dog??? rip bucky#very self indulgent entry to spirit week because it contains my favorite rare (?) headcanons:#a) Bucky was more of Candace's dog because both Phineas and Ferb were VERY small at the time. so she took his loss hardest#and thats why she is so reluctant and against a new pet aka perry when they first got him#b) Bucky was an ex OWCA agent that perished in battle with his nemesis Old Man Simmons hence their very fossilized remains in museum#c) bucky and perry were acquainted during Perry's training (maybe even some mentoring??) so perry understands that feeling of loss#d) bonus HC Bucky was named after Bucky Barnes because of his one sleeved coloring and Candace named him with her Bio dad from whom she#got her love of superhero comics. while her ultimate fav is thor bucky is second fav#all my fellow candace fans know where most of those headcanons come from for sure for sure xDD we all read the fics hehehe

ex!husband!rafe when he finds out you had another guy over while your son was there
divider is from @princessbrunette
wc: 947 — a/n: sorta a new layout
you hear the knock at your door late at night, sharp and deliberate. you already know who it is before you open it.
rafe stands in the doorway, jaw clenched, eyes dark with something between anger and possession. he’s still dressed from work—white button-down undone at the collar, sleeves rolled up, rolex catching in the dim porch light. he looks every bit the man you once loved, the man you once shared a life with. the man you thought you had finally left behind.
but you didn’t. not really.
“you wanna tell me why my son is talking about some man in my house?” his voice is low, biting, laced with an authority he has no right to wield over you anymore.
your stomach knots. “rafe—”
“don’t,” he cuts you off, stepping inside, closing the door behind him like he still owns the place. like he still owns you. “who the fuck was he?”
you exhale sharply. “it’s none of your business.”
“the fuck it isn’t,” rafe scoffs. “some guy plays house around my kid, and i’m just supposed to sit back and take it?” he steps closer, eyes locking onto yours. “you still belong to me.”
you shake your head, voice firm. “no, rafe. that’s not how this works anymore.”
his hand grips your chin, tilting your face up to meet his, forcing you to hold his gaze. his touch isn’t rough, but it isn’t gentle either. “does he take care of you? huh? what does he make? forty, fifty grand a year?” he laughs, shaking his head. “you slumming it now? is that what you want our son to see?”
your jaw tightens. “i don’t want our son to be like you.”
that makes him pause. his grip tightens just slightly, enough to make your breath hitch.
“like me?” he murmurs, tilting his head. “entitled? condescending?” his lips curl into something dark, something cruel. “or just a man who gets what he wants?”
you glare at him, trying to pull back, but he doesn’t let you.
“you forget your place,” rafe murmurs, voice like a promise. he leans in, his breath hot against your skin. “you’re mine, baby. always have been. always will be.”
your body betrays you, shivering at the claim, at the truth laced within it.
his lips brush against your cheek as he whispers, “you can let him pretend all you want. but we both know—no one else will ever be me.”
you press your hands against his chest, pushing him back with more force this time. “stop, rafe.” your voice wavers, not as firm as you want it to be.
he lets you push him—barely—but he doesn’t step back. he lingers, watching you with something knowing in his eyes, something that says he sees right through you.
“you don’t get to do this,” you say, voice quieter now. “we’re done.”
he hums, like he’s considering your words. then he smirks, that same infuriating, arrogant smirk that used to drive you crazy. “and yet… i’m still here. in your house. late at night.” his voice dips, low and dangerous. “like always.”
you swallow hard, refusing to let him pull you back in. “because you forced your way in.”
his fingers trail up your arm, slow and deliberate. “and you haven’t made me leave.”
you jerk away from his touch, breath unsteady. “i don’t want you here, rafe.”
he lets out a sharp laugh, shaking his head. “that’s cute, baby. real fucking cute.” his expression darkens. “you think i’m gonna just sit back while you play house with some nobody? while my son—my fucking son—is around some piece of shit you brought home?”
your jaw tightens. “he’s a good man.”
rafe’s hand snaps out, gripping your chin again, firmer this time. “he’s not me.”
you glare at him, but the intensity in his gaze makes your stomach twist.
his thumb drags across your lower lip, slow and possessive. “tell me something, sweetheart.” he leans in, his voice barely above a whisper. “does he even know what to do with you?”
your breath catches. “rafe—”
his lips brush against your ear. “does he know how to handle you? how to make you beg?”
you push against his chest again, but this time he doesn’t move.
he chuckles, dark and satisfied. “yeah. that’s what i thought.”
your hands tremble as you shove harder. “i don’t want this! i don’t want you!”
he catches your wrist, holding it against his chest. “liar.”
you shake your head, tears burning your eyes. “you don’t own me.”
rafe exhales, shaking his head like you’re saying something ridiculous. then his hand moves to your jaw, tilting your head up until you have no choice but to look at him.
“you really think you can change what you are?” his voice is softer now, but no less dangerous. “what we are?”
your breath is shallow, and your pulse is erratic.
his thumb strokes your cheek, almost gentle. “you’re mine. you always will be. no one else will ever touch you the way i do.”
you hate the way your body reacts to him. hate the way his words sink into your skin like they belong there.
he watches you, eyes flickering with something dark and triumphant. “so go ahead, baby. let him pretend he has a chance.” his lips hover over yours, teasing. “we both know where you’ll end up.”
your voice is barely a whisper. “rafe…”
he smiles, pressing one last lingering kiss to your jaw before finally—finally—pulling away.
“for now,” he murmurs. then he turns, walking to the door like he owns the place.
like he still owns you.
and maybe, just maybe… he does.

——
You cursed under your breath as your shopping bags began to slip through your fingers. From your hip, Hana fussed unhappily, tiny hands clawing at your face as you struggled to adjust your grip on her.
“S’cuse me,” A woman said, giving you an annoyed glance as she stepped around you. The others behind you made sounds of frustration as you struggled to wrangle your babbling child and groceries out of the store’s entrance.
“Would you mind getting out of the way?” A man asked impatiently as one of your bags slipped.
“I’m sorry,” You said, face burning with embarrassment.
Hana began to cry, her tiny body impossibly strong as she twisted in your arms, trying to escape your grasp.
“Jesus Christ,” He muttered, pushing past you.
You bit your lip, hair falling in your face to hide the tears pricking the corners of your eyes. Everything was so hard. Ever since your ex had moved out, you’d had no one to help you.
No one to stay up with Hana when she was fussy, no one to entertain her so you could sneak a quick shower in, no one to get groceries while you washed, and fed, and tended to her.
Your parents were a state away, your friends busy with work or travel—none with kids of their own. No one who understood what you were going through. Standing in the doorway of the grocery store, you felt, for the first time since Hana's father left, the true gravity of how alone you both were.
Another exasperated sigh came from behind you as Hana began to cry in earnest, her shrill voice piercing the air of the store.
“Should’ve left her at home with dad,” An older woman said, tsking as she stepped around you. “New moms these days, thinking they can do it all on their own. That kind of attitude kills marriages, you know."
You opened your mouth to defend yourself—to tell her that you couldn't kill a marriage that didn't exist, to even just curse back at her—when the paper bag you’d managed to hold onto split open, the contents spilling out onto the floor.
“For fuck’s sake,” A man said, shoving past you. His shoulder caught yours, knocking you off balance.
Hana’s weight threw you off-kilter, and you stumbled to the ground, holding her tiny wriggling body to your chest.
You wanted to cry.
Beside you, someone stooped to the ground, hastily grabbing the groceries that had fallen out of your bag. You looked up, the apology already forming on your mouth. As your eyes landed on them, the words died in your mouth.
Heeseung.
Your heart skipped.
He didn’t say anything as he gathered the rest of your things, giving you a hand up. His eyes were glued to the squirming toddler in your arms.
With your groceries collected, you were able to step to the side, Heeseung’s hand still on your arm. The customers who’d gathered behind you filed past, one man glaring at you as he did.
“Finally,” He muttered.
Heeseung’s head snapped in his direction. “Fuck off,” He shot back. Then, looking from Hana to you, he chuckled nervously. “Sorry.”
You were speechless.
How long had it been since you’d seen him? Three years? Three years since he boarded the jet that had carried him out of your life forever.
You remembered it like it was yesterday—ENHYPEN was going on tour, he wasn't sure when he'd be back, or when he'd have time for you again. The group had just started to take off. This was the big break, he’d said. The one that would start the rest of his life.
Going with him was out of the question. Long distance was brutal. Fans were possessive of their favorite members, and a girlfriend was a risk that management couldn't afford. It took all but a few hours for him to be cut from your life. Gone. Erased. Entirely.
And now, here he was. Lee Heeseung, the great heartbreak of your life, standing in the middle of your friendly neighborhood grocery store, eyes darting back and forth between you and the one-year-old clinging to your hip.
Hana made a noise, reaching a hand out at him curiously. He glanced at her, his expression softening. He smiled as he leaned forward, cooing gently while she fiddled with the earring that dangled from his ear.
Your chest tightened.
“Here,” He said, taking the bags from your hands. “Where did you park?”
——
“I didn’t mean to sneak up on you,” Heeseung said quietly as he put the last of your things into your car.
He looked just as you remembered him—tall, handsome, soft-faced, and even softer-voiced. He carried a bag of his own, full of items that sent you back to your school days with him—glossy packages of instant ramen, cling-wrapped kimbap, and those energy drinks he always liked.
You tore your eyes from them, trying to shake the memories of late nights in his dorm from your mind.
“No,” You said, meeting his eyes. God, his eyes. Just as deep and intense as you remembered them. “I should be thanking you. Back there,” You gestured awkwardly, “I was… It’s been a long day.”
His eyes darted to Hana again. You could practically see the question forming on his lips, but he was still the Heeseung you knew, far too polite to outright ask.
“Hana,” You said, smiling at the pink-faced toddler in your backseat. "She's one," You added quickly, watching for his reaction.
He nodded, his expression conflicted, like he was working through his thoughts. “I didn’t know…” He said slowly, looking back at you.
“I know. I… didn’t want you to,” You admitted. “You had a lot going on."
His face dropped. “Y/n, I want you to know, I didn’t mean to—”
“I know,” You said simply, looking down. “You had a life to live. Dreams to chase.” You smiled at him, genuine, although something deep in your heart had begun to ache, starting the moment you’d locked eyes with him. “I was always proud of you for going."
“I shouldn’t have left like that. I know you wanted me to go, and I’m glad I did, but I…” His fingers toyed with the strings of his bag nervously. “…I shouldn’t have left without saying goodbye.”
You shook your head, pushing the memories away. “Don’t worry about it. Water under the bridge.”
From the car, Hana began to cry again. It was well past her dinnertime, which meant she’d be inconsolable until you got her home and into her high chair, which was… still broken.
You bit back a curse, remembering that you’d needed to run to the store to replace it today. A week of trying to feed her without it had proven nearly impossible. Especially now that you were alone.
You turned back to Heeseung, trying not to feel disappointed that reality was sweeping you two apart again. What was that phrase? Right person, wrong time? Well, this was two for two.
“Anyways," You said. "Thank you. Seriously. I was losing it in there.”
“You headed home now?” He asked, looking between you, as if trying to keep the conversation going. Hanna was bawling, fists clenched angrily.
You nodded, pulling a snack pack from your bag and tearing it open, hoping it’d be enough to satiate her until you got home. If you could get her fed, maybe you’d have time to take care of all the other things that were piled on your to-do list.
There were dishes waiting for you, and sticky counters, and laundry. So much laundry. The light in your room had gone out and needed replacing, but you barely had enough time to sleep there, let alone perform a maintenance job on it.
You sighed out a tired laugh, rubbing your face with your hand. “Um, yeah. She needs to be fed and put to sleep, and there’s some housework stuff. You know, never a boring day,” You joked half-heartedly.
Heeseung hummed. Then, hesitantly, asked, "Where’s her dad?”
The question knocked the wind out of you.
He gazed at you curiously, a hint of concern in his eyes. It made your stomach twist uncomfortably. This was the one thing you didn’t want coming up.
The baby? Sure. Your embarrassing moment in the store? Fine. Even the state of your hair and clothes, covered in stains and baby powder and spit-up, whatever.
But the fact that you were alone, that the person you’d chosen to father your child was nowhere to be found, that stung in the back of your throat. Nothing had changed. You were still the one being left behind.
Heeseung read the look on your face. “Oh,” He said. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—”
“It’s okay.” You cut him off, not sure if you could take the awkwardness of this conversation any longer. “But, yeah, I should go. I have… a lot to do at home. Everything’s on her schedule these days.”
“Can I help?”
You felt your breath catch for a second time. “What?” You laughed nervously.
Heeseung nodded at your groceries and at the squawking baby in the back seat. “Can I help you? We’re on break. Been doing pretty much nothing but sitting around the house, gaming all day. I’ll come over.”
“Heeseung…” You started, images of your messy baby-proofed home springing to mind. As if he needed to see any more of the disheveled single mom life. “You don’t have to do that, really, you’ve helped enough—”
“Y/n, we've known each other for a long time. I can tell you’re up to your neck right now. I want to help,” He said earnestly. “Will you let me?”
You held your breath, searching his face for some clue as to what this meant for you two. Ten minutes ago, you had no idea he was even back home. And now... he was asking for a step back into your life.
The inside of your cheek stung as you chewed on it. Finally, you sighed. "What the hell. Fine. Here, let me write down my address for you."
There, at the corners of his eyes, you caught it. That glimpse of joy in his expression, of hope. It confused the fuck out of you, but you just waved to him, climbing into your car and wondering what this meant for you.
——
It was practically impossible to walk across your house without tripping over one of the toys that littered the ground. There were dishes all over the kitchen counters, soup stains on the wall behind Hana’s highchair where she'd thrown her spoon, dirty laundry spilling out of your closet and across the floor.
Heeseung didn't seem to care at all.
In fact, the only thing he seemed to care about was your daughter. Her small fists, the rosy color of her cheeks, the bubbling sound of her laughter. You'd known Heeseung liked kids—you'd talked about having them once—but what you didn't know was how much they loved him.
He and Hana hit it off immediately, faster than you'd ever seen her take to anyone before.
Without a high chair, you’d been struggling to find the best way to keep her stationary long enough to feed her. Heeseung, however, only propped her on his leg, one hand around her stomach, the other holding her plastic pink Hello Kitty spoon.
It was like magic.
No crying, no spitting. No throwing or hitting. You watched in wonder as she sat there, hands resting on his forearm. The perfect little angel you always bragged about back in full swing.
Her preoccupation with him gave you a chance to not only make her dinner, but get her pajamas out and set up her bath for later. It was the most you'd managed to get done in a single hour in weeks.
Having Heeseung there wasn’t just helpful, it was... overwhelming. His presence filled your senses—the smell of his cologne intermingled with Hana's baby lotion, the feeling of him moving around the kitchen behind you, his voice mixing with her giggling nonsense in the living room.
It was intoxicating. It was dangerous. Because part of you wished—had always wished—desperately and against all reason, that this was what your everyday looked like.
You tried to dissuade that wish as you bent over the kitchen sink, elbow deep in soapy water and dirty dishes. Heeseung came in from the dining room, holding Hana's little bowl and matching spoon in one hand, her bib in the other.
"All done," He said, placing them on the counter. "Finished the whole thing." He sounded proud. It made your chest tighten.
"That girl sure can eat," You said lightly, grabbing the dishes and submerging them under water.
"Mmm, just like her mom, then," He joked.
Being there with him, joking with him, it stirred something in you. Something you'd spent a long time trying to forget. Your throat closed as he came up behind you, dry hand sliding over your soapy one.
"What—" You started, but he was already pulling the bowl from your hands, nudging you out of the way.
"I got this. Go finish up with her."
You pressed your lips into a thin line, ignoring the fluttering sensation that crawled up your throat. He was helping, just like he said he would. It was meaningless.
Still, the feeling of his palm on the back of your hand had your heart stuttering.
In the solitude of the bathroom, you rested your chin on your hand, watching as Hana dunked her plastic horse under the soapy bathwater. She held it up to you, babbling through the bubbles on your face.
You sighed. "What d'you think? Should we let him stick around?"
She slammed her horse back into the water with a squeal, sending water over the edge of the tub.
“Yeah,” You muttered, half to yourself. “That’s what I thought.”
You looked over at yourself in the mirror, leaned against the edge of the bathtub, your clothes and hair damp from your daughter’s splashing. So different from the girl that Heeseung had left behind all those years ago. The one he once swore he’d come back for.
You felt childish for even remembering that. Everything was different now. He could have anything he wanted. The girls around him were exactly what you weren’t, what you’d stopped being the moment you found out you were pregnant. They might have been your age, but they weren't saddled with motherhood.
You, on the other hand, would never be able to escape it again.
All anyone seemed to talk about with you was the baby. How old she was now, if she’d started talking yet, how well-behaved she was.
Even running into Heeseung, the first thing he looked at was her. It was like watching yourself fade from existence, all trace of what once made you you vanishing into nothingness.
You weren’t fun. You weren’t spontaneous. Not anymore. Motherhood had drained you of all that youthful vitality Heeseung had once loved so much about you. You felt bland. Boring. Nothing to call your own except for your daughter, who seemed to be the most interesting part of your life nowadays.
Looking at Hana now, you knew there was no way that Heeseung was going to make a permanent return to your life, not when there was a child involved.
And yet.
And yet, Heeseung was still around when you were done with Hana’s bath.
He’d finished the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen. He’d put the rest of your groceries away and tossed all of Hana’s toys back in their bin. He even took the trash out, and was offering to fix the light in your room when you stopped him.
“Are you gonna make me kick you out?” You said, hands on your hips.
The corners of his mouth quirked, his brow lifting. “You really are someone’s mom, huh?”
“Heeseung.”
“Come on,” He laughed, “I’m already here, I might as well fix it. You really want me to go?”
No, of course you didn’t. Of course, you wanted him to stay and help you with your light, and fix your leaky shower head, and make your daughter laugh herself all the way to sleep.
Of course, you wanted him to find a million other things to help you with, and to let you keep imagining what life would be like if he were to be there. To really, truly be there.
What, were you supposed to say no to all that?
By the time the sun finally dipped below the horizon, Hana was dozing off in Heeseung’s arms, her cheek flat against his shoulder.
You watched from the kitchen doorway, unable to tear your eyes away from the sight of them. He swayed slightly, bouncing up and down with a hand to her back.
No one held her like that. Not even her dad. He’d wanted almost nothing to do with her. The diapers, the crying, the mess. He’d decided enough was enough before she was even born. But Heeseung…
“She’s incredible,” He said, glancing back at you. His face was soft, shoulders relaxed. It looked almost like she was as comforting to him as he was to her, with her hand wrapped around the fabric of his shirt.
Your throat was tight. “She is. Takes after me, you know,” You joked, trying to ease the effect that this scene was having on you. Your face was warm.
He chuckled, pursing his lips as she stirred gently. After a moment, he said, “I can’t believe I didn’t know.”
You leaned against the doorframe. “It wasn’t something I wanted you to hear from someone else.”
“Yeah,” He said. “Still.”
Still.
He finally looked up at you, and you saw it—how much he was holding back. How hard this was hitting him, all at once. Sure, it had been a long time, but the emotions on his face were like a second language to you. You could read them in your sleep.
“I’m not asking for anything,” You said quickly, maybe too quickly. “I’m not—bringing you here because I want something from you.”
“I know,” He said. But he kept holding Hana anyway, and when you laid her down in her room for the night, he was still in the living room, waiting for you.
“You do all this on your own?” He asked, keeping his voice low.
“Every day.”
“You’re amazing,” He whispered.
“Thanks,” You laughed.
He followed you into the kitchen. “I always knew you’d be a good mom.”
The comment sent a jolt of electricity through you.
“What?”
“Yeah, didn’t I ever tell you that?”
You stared at him. “No.”
“I’m sure I did.”
“I think I’d remember if you did. So, no.”
He flashed that smile, the one that used to make you weak in the knees. Still made you weak in the knees. “Then I was an idiot.”
You scoffed, eyeing him skeptically. “Whatever. My house is a mess, and I have literally no social life. Look at me, I’m covered in baby food, and I’m not even the one who fed the baby.”
“Yeah, well,” He shrugged, that stupid smile on his face. “You make anything look good.”
You narrowed your eyes. “You’re making fun of me.”
He gasped. “What? No, I’m just a very supportive friend who happens to know that you manage to make everything look sexy, even being covered in baby food.”
Friend.
“Heeseung.” You used to be the love of my life.
“What!” He grinned. “You’re the one who keeps blushing.”
“I am not blushing.”
He shook his head as he laughed, the sound light and pure. “I missed you. God, I missed you a lot.”
You tensed.
“That first year of tour was hell,” He reminisced, leaning back against your counter. “We hardly slept, or ate, or got any moments to ourselves. It was just go, go, go. All day, every day.” He glanced at you. “But being away from you was by far the worst part.”
“Whatever,” You said quietly. There was a lump in the back of your throat.
He hovered as you finished putting the dry dishes away in your cupboard. “It was hard without you there. You know, you’re the reason I debuted in the first place. Because you believed in me.”
Did you ever believe in me? You wanted to ask. Lingering resentment was seeping from the back of your mind, coloring those happy memories a shade darker. How was it so easy for you to leave me?
“It was hard looking out for everyone without you there,” He chuckled. “You always made that part easier. That’s how I know.”
“Know what?” You said, eyes on the plates in your hands.
“That you’d make a good mom. You were already halfway there with me.”
You froze. “Heeseung,” You said slowly, “Don’t.”
“What? I’m just saying—”
“No, you’re not. You’re flirting.”
He gave you a lopsided smile. “Is that illegal now?”
You stared at him. “We can’t do this.”
His smile faltered, just slightly. Enough that you knew he’d heard the part you didn’t say aloud: Not again. I can’t do this again.
“I’m not trying to mess anything up,” He said quietly.
“But you do, Heeseung. You walk in, and you smile, and she adores you, and then what? You go back to your life, and we’re left here pretending this never happened? I’ve been there, done that, okay? And I can’t— I won’t let it happen again.”
He opened his mouth, but no answer came.
“Look, I get it. You were gone for a long time. Being back home carries a lot of weight, I’m sure. But you can’t…” You looked at him, chest aching. “You can’t just come in here and make me feel like nothing’s changed when it has. I mean, look around. I have a kid now. I can’t— I’m not like you. Not anymore.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” He asked, a look of hurt flashing behind his eyes.
You ran your hand over your hair anxiously. It was late, you were exhausted, and you were letting your emotions get the better of you. You knew you should stop talking and just send him home, but you couldn’t.
“You have your whole life ahead of you,” You said. “You get to pack up and travel the world, do whatever you want, meet whoever you want. I don’t. That ended for me the second I had her.”
“Y/n,” He frowned, but you cut him off.
“I thought…” Tears pricked behind your eyes. “I thought that maybe things would just be a little different. That I’d still get to—” You caught your breath, the weight of everything you’d gone through rising suddenly, knocking the breath from your lungs. “And then it ended all over again. When her dad left.”
You saw the way his face hardened, a look you hadn’t seen in years. Hurt. Angry. Protective.
“I’m alone, Heeseung,” You whispered.
“That’s not true—”
“Yes, it is.”
“It’s not! You have me—”
“Then where were you!?”
His face fell. You didn’t want him to see you cry, but you were dangerously close. Being near him, seeing that god forsaken look in his eyes, like he was angry with himself, it killed you.
“I didn’t know,” He said quietly. “If I had—”
“You would have, what? Cancelled your tour? Come racing home to help your ex with some other guy’s baby? That’s not true and you know it.”
“I would have found a way to be there for you.”
“Really? You could have called. Once, even. You could have checked up on me, but you didn’t. You packed your things and you left. That’s all anyone ever does, is pack up and disappear.”
“Don’t, y/n. It’s not the same thing. I never would have left you with our kid like that,” He said seriously.
Our kid. The words seemed to burrow into your chest, curling up around the part of you that was still so angry, so hurt, so betrayed.
“No,” You said bitterly, wiping your eyes roughly with your sleeve. “You just left me. Not as big a deal, right?”
He flinched, those big, sad eyes of his wincing painfully.
You knew it wasn’t fair. You knew you were being cruel now, prodding a wound that was clearly still open in both of you, but you couldn’t help it. You wanted, just once, for someone to tell you that you were worth fighting for, that the way he and Hana’s dad had both abandoned you wasn’t your fault. That you weren’t defective. Disposable.
Heeseung held your gaze, brows creased. “I deserved that,” He finally said.
You looked away, jaw clenched.
He took a step toward you, slow, like he was scared you might push him away. “You’re right, I did. I left. I let you believe that I didn’t care about you. I thought… walking away would make things easier. That it would hurt less, instead of dragging it out, making you wait for me. You had a life of your own waiting. I couldn’t do that to you,” He reasoned. “And look at you! You brought a kid into the world, y/n. You never needed me, or anyone else. You’re strong.”
“I’m not,” You argued.
“You are,” He said firmly.
You shook your head, arms tightening around yourself. “I’m not strong. I’m surviving. That’s not the same thing.”
Heeseung didn’t argue this time. He gave you an apologetic look, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “I didn’t mean to come here and upset you. I wanted… I really did want to help, y/n.”
“You have,” You said, not meeting his eyes. It was hard to speak without your voice shaking, and you didn’t want him to see you cry.
His voice softened, gaze dropping to the floor. “I know I can’t change the past. And you don’t trust me. But we’re back home until the next album’s finished.”
Your chest tightened. So, he was sticking around. Great, you thought to yourself. Just what you needed on top of everything else you had going on.
“If you need me, you can call me. You know that, right?”
You said nothing. Heeseung got his things and left, mumbling apologies as the door closed behind him. You had to catch your breath against the doorframe as the sound of his car faded down the street.
Here you were again. Watching the door swing closed behind him, wishing you were brave enough to ask him to stay.
That night, you went into Hana's room and curled up in the chair beside her crib. Looking at her—the soft fat of her cheeks, the way her tiny chest rose and fell so steadily without a care in the world—was the only thing that kept you from breaking down completely.
You watched her silently, the occasional rogue tear slipping down your cheek. Three years worth of emotions had bubbled up to the surface, crashing over you like a tidal wave of memories and regret. The house was empty again. You were alone.
For the first time, you confronted the hard truth you’d been trying to ignore: no one was coming to save you. You were on your own.
——
Heeseung must have looked upset, because the moment he got back to the dorm, the others were on him.
“Where were you?” Sunoo asked, looking up from his game.
Beside him, Jay, Sunghoon, and Jungwon were sprawled on the couch. Jake watched from the floor, stretched out on his stomach. Niki was curled up in the chair, half asleep.
“Nowhere,” Heeseung mumbled, kicking his shoes off.
“You look like shit,” Jay said bluntly.
“Thanks.”
“I thought you were just stopping at the store?” Jake turned to look at Heeseung over his shoulder. “Geez, you really do look terrible.”
Jungwon looked at him curiously. “Are you okay?”
Heeseung’s mind was still spinning. He could barely form a coherent thought, let alone answer their questions. He brushed them off, wanting nothing more than to disappear into his room in solitude.
But these were his group members, his best friends, and they always knew when something was wrong. They switched the game off and trailed after Heeseung as he made his way to his room, shoving his door open. It bounced against the wall loudly.
Heeseung winced, dropping onto his mattress. His body felt worn, his mind foggy, like he’d spent all day on stage instead of laughing with you in your kitchen. He still couldn’t believe he’d spent the day with you. In fact, he could hardly believe anything about what had happened.
There were no words to describe what Heeseung had felt, seeing you again for the first time. It was like every one of his senses dialed in on your figure crouched in the door, your hair falling over your shoulders. His throat had closed, his fingers curling into his palms by his side.
His heart had nearly leapt out of his chest completely.
And then, there was Hana.
He hoped he didn’t look as surprised as he’d felt, but he knew the chances were small. You’d always been able to read his emotions. You’d been the one to ask him out, after all—sick and tired of how painfully obvious his feelings for you were. No one else had ever came close to understanding him the way you did, not even the guys.
You probably saw right through his easy attitude, straight to the heart of his reaction: seeing you with Hana had scared him shitless.
He pressed a hand to his face. I’m never offering to go to the store for the others ever again, he thought hopelessly.
Jungwon appeared in the doorway, leaning against the frame. The others poked their heads out from behind, waiting for him to say something first. Jungwon might have been younger, but he was their leader, through and through.
He always knew what each member needed in moments like these. For Heeseung, it was space. And time. Jungwon just stood there for a while, not saying anything.
Heeseung’s voice was rough when he finally spoke. “I saw y/n.”
More silence.
He hadn't talked about you in a long time, mostly because it brought his mood down every time someone so much as mentioned your name. Years later and he was still upset about the way you'd left things.
And now he knew that you were, too.
“I ran into her at the store,” He continued. “Her bag had ripped so her stuff was everywhere, and people were getting pissed.” Fucking assholes. “I couldn’t just— turn the other way, pretend I didn’t know her.”
No one argued with that, but Heeseung still felt the back of his neck go red.
"So I went up to her. I helped her grab her things. She..." He trailed off. "We went back to her's after."
Jake shoulders dropped, looking relieved. "So, what's with the long face? Haven't you been dreaming about this since, like, we left?"
“Yeah, I’m surprised you’re back here,” Jay smirked. “She didn’t want you to stay the night?”
"She has a kid."
That shut them up.
She has a kid. The words sounded foreign in Heeseung's ears. He still hadn't fully wrapped his head around it. The girl he’d been hung up on for years was a mom.
Jungwon’s eyebrows shot up. “Like.. has has?”
Heeseung nodded. “A little girl. Her name’s Hana.”
“So that means she’s…”
“Single,” Heeseung said incredulously, falling backwards onto his mattress. The entire situation was mind boggling. “Hana’s dad isn’t around. Not sure why. All I know is that it was sudden. He just packed up one day and… left.”
Just like I did, He thought bitterly. God, he’d made a number of mistakes throughout his life, but that had to be the worst of them all.
“Damn,” Jungwon said under his breath. “That’s a lot.”
Sunghoon shifted his weight anxiously. “How did she seem?”
Heeseung swallowed. “Tired. She looked so tired. And sad. I could see it in her eyes, even though she was trying not to show it.”
“She didn’t ask for anything?” Jake asked.
“No. She doesn’t want anything from me. She made that pretty clear.” Heeseung dragged a hand through his hair. “I don’t even know what to do. I thought I’d moved on, or at least that I was done holding onto her. But seeing her like that…” His voice cracked, and he looked away. “It’s like everything I’ve been trying to forget just—came back all at once.”
Jungwon finally stepped into the room, going to sit beside Heeseung. The others trailed in after him. It was crowded with all of them there, but Heeseung was suddenly overwhelmed with gratitude that they were with him. That he didn’t have to spend the night alone with his thoughts.
Like you were now. He thought of you alone in that house, working through the motions of your reunion by yourself. It made his chest ache.
“Shouldn’t have left her,” He mumbled, mostly to himself.
“Are you going to see her again?”
“I don’t know,” He mumbled. “We argued. I think she doesn’t want to believe I could ever be there for her. That I’m just going to leave again.” His throat tightened. “I can’t blame her for feeling that way.”
“Are you?”
“I— no, I don’t want to. But she’s afraid to trust me. And I’m scared, too! What if she’s right? She’s always right. I don’t wanna cause her more trouble…”
Now that he was talking, he couldn’t stop. The others listened intently, nodding along, humming sounds of understanding.
“I’m scared that the more I try to get closer to her, the further I’m going to push her away. She has enough shit going on in her life right now. I don’t want to add to that. But I can’t just let her be. Not when I know she’s too proud to ask anyone else for help.”
“No, not y/n.” Sunoo hid a laugh behind his hand. “That girl would rather die than rely on anyone else. She’s always preferred to figure it out on her own.”
“I know. I don’t want to fuck up her life anymore than I already have.”
“Hey, at least you’re not the asshole who knocked her up,” Jay said lightly.
Heeseung bit his lip, suddenly worried he was going insane.
Worried because the smallest part of him almost wished that he was. He would have never left you alone. And… Well, he’d always liked the idea of you with his kids. He meant what he said earlier—if anyone was going to make a good parent, it was you.
A baby would have killed his career for sure, but… he almost preferred that to the idea of you struggling through parenthood alone.
“So what are you going to do?” Jungwon asked.
“I don’t know,” Heeseung sighed, sitting up. “What if I try to be there for her, and I make things worse? What if she’s right not to trust me? I don’t want to—” He ran his hands through his hair anxiously. “I can’t hurt her again. I’d rather never see her again than have that happen.”
Jungwon pursed his lips, thinking. “It is true that you’ll have to leave again when the next album is finished.”
The others nodded, murmuring in agreement.
“Tour life isn’t exactly fit for a kid.”
“There’s always the chance that people find out about you two.”
“You’d have to be apart for a long time.”
Jungwon nodded. “But… do you love her?”
Heeseung’s face went red. “What?”
“Quit acting embarrassed. We had to listen to you go on about her for a year straight after we left. I think you can tell us if you’re still in love with her.”
He pursed his lips and frowned, mulling the question over. Was he still in love with you?
Who was he kidding, of course he was. How else could he explain the way the world seemed to blur when he caught sight of you in the store? How his body was moving to help you before he even had time to think about it?
Heeseung was in love with you. As in love with you as he was the day he left. Why else had he spent all day at your house doing chores, enjoying every minute? The way you moved around each other, the sound of Hana’s voice responding to yours, the way he could see pieces of you in her. God, he’d only known that girl for a day but he was already feeling protective of her.
Of both of you.
He sighed. “Yes… I do. I am.” He pressed his thumb into his palm, where he’d brushed the back of your hand. “I really missed her,” He mumbled. “But I’m scared to mess everything up. Again.”
“You’re not gonna do that,” Sunghoon said, leaning against the wall.
“Yeah, come on. I’ve never seen you make the same mistake twice.”
“Thanks,” He muttered, still unable to shake his fears.
“If you really love her, you’ll find a way to make it work,” Jungwon assured him.
Hearing that brought a small amount of relief to Heeseung’s anxiety, but he still wasn’t convinced. “What if she doesn’t want to see me?” He asked quietly.
Sunoo rolled his eyes. “Honestly, you’re so dramatic. If she doesn’t want to see you, she’ll tell you. Did she?”
“No… not explicitly…”
“Then you still have a chance. Don’t screw it up.”
Heeseung chuckled lightly, feeling slightly better. “I’ll try not to.”
“Screw your feelings, we miss having her around,” Sunghoon joked.
“Yeah, I wanna meet this kid,” Jake said eagerly. “If she’s anything like y/n, she’ll fit in just fine with us.”
Niki hummed in agreement. “Yeah, we never agreed to your break up.”
“Mm. Very inconsiderate of you,” Jay said.
Heeseung laughed, for real this time. He felt his chest untighten for the first time in hours, his shoulders dropping, his jaw unclenching. God, he was grateful for his friends. They were right.
Heeseung had been losing his mind over what he should do when there was really only one option in front of him: to prove to you how serious he was about you. Whether or not you were able to fix things between you two, that didn’t matter to him.
All he cared about was showing you that you could trust him. That you weren’t alone in this, no matter how long you’d spent believing otherwise.
Seeing you today confirmed what he’d known the second he’d left all those years ago: you were the only one for him. And meeting Hana—feeling the warmth of her against his chest, smelling your perfume on her skin, noticing the way her lips curved up in the same shape that yours did—it was the final nail in the coffin.
His life would never be complete without you in it, one-year-old and all.
——
Heeseung’s reappearance in your life didn’t happen immediately.
In fact, it was a few weeks before you heard from him again. Lost in the throes of trying to find a babysitter so that you could pick up an extra shift at work, his text was left buried in calls from your landlord and notices about upcoming bills.
Heeseung Are u busy this weekend? I have some overexcited friends who are anxious to meet that baby of yours.
It sat unanswered for a day.
You didn’t know it, but every single one of the 24 hours that passed before you got back to Heeseung was like knives in his skin. The day dragged by, long and torturous, as he sank deeper and deeper into the belief that maybe he’d been wrong, and you didn’t want to hear from him after all.
He was relieved when his phone buzzed on his desk, your name popping up on his screen for the first time in three years.
Y/N Oh god.
Y/N Are u really gonna bring them over here??
Heeseung Not if you’re not okay with it.
Y/N It’s not that I’m not okay with it. it’s just… weird
Y/N Never thought I’d be introducing your group members to my kid.
Heeseung Definitely weird.
Heeseung Always figured they’d meet ours first but this works too.
Y/N Heeseung.
Heeseung What? Just saying.
Y/N 🙄
Heeseung I’ll be good. I promise. Saturday?
He chewed the edge of his nail as he watched his screen, heart racing at the base of his throat. Your text came in and he couldn’t help the smile that took over his face.
Y/N Yeah right.
Y/N See you then.
You had precious little time to clean up before they got there. When you heard Heeseung’s knock at the door, you were part-way through clearing Hana’s things out of the living room.
Sweaty, hair a mess, sticky toddler on your hip, you pulled the door open to a group of faces you hadn’t seen in years.
The guys stood there for a second, taking you in. Sunoo was the first to break the silence, his face widening into a grin. “Wow,” he said, “Motherhood really does suit you.”
You rolled your eyes, your face warming as you shifted Hana on your hip. “Shut up, Sunoo.”
Hana peeked out at them, fists clutching your shirt nervously.
Jake’s eyes went wide as he crouched down, level with her. “Hi,” He said, his voice going soft. “You’re so cute, oh my god. Mind if we come in?”
Hana smiled shyly, burying her face in your shoulder.
“Sorry about the mess,” You said, stepping aside to let them in. “Can never seem to keep anything clean these days.”
“You should’ve called us,” Sunoo pouted. “We could’ve helped.”
“No way. You guys are busy enough as it is.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Jay said. “You should see how these guys live”
“Oh, shut up, Jay. Your room is disgusting. I don’t know how you live in that filth.”
“My room is disgusting!? Should we talk about how you keep the living room—”
“Get out of the way!” Jungwon complained, pushing past them.
Heeseung was the last to come in, messy-haired and bare-faced. He looked nervous, but his shoulders dropped when he caught sight of you.
He paused in the doorway. “You sure you’re okay with this?” He asked quietly.
“Yeah,” You said. “It’s fine. Just… don’t expect her to start doing tricks or anything.”
“Are you sure?” Sunghoon asked, peeking at Hana. “I heard kids can dance these days.”
“Please,” You scoffed. “She can barely get a spoon from her plate to her mouth.”
They laughed as they filed in, avoiding the toys that were scattered around the floor. For a moment, no one wanted to sit down. They crowded around you, pulling funny faces to make Hana laugh, reaching out to pinch her face.
Heeseung hovered beside you, eyes flicking to yours. It felt good to have him close. You’d never had this many people in your house before, not since having Hana. His presence was steadying. Reassuring.
You found yourself wanting to stick close to him as well.
They followed you into the living room, pointing at the photos and finger-painting scribbles hung up on the walls. You noticed Heeseung from the corner of your eye, bending down to grab things from the floor as he went, tossing them into Hana’s toy chest the same way he had when he first came over.
It was instinctual, that desire to help you, to take some of the load off your shoulders. Always had been.
“How are you, y/n?” Jungwon asked, “Besides the cute baby and messy living room.”
“Um,” You sighed, “I’m… managing. Getting used to doing all this on my own. It’s hard but rewarding, too.” You smiled at Hana, pressing your lips to her head and breathing in the soft, sweet baby smell of her hair. “She makes it worth it.”
Your voice was easy, your face relaxed, but Heeseung could see the fatigue in your body. Your shoulders drooped, Hana’s weight sagging in your arms.
Getting used to doing all this on my own. You’d never know how sad it made him to hear you say that.
“I can’t imagine how tired you are,” Jake said, watching as Hana curled a hand around his finger.
You laughed lightly. “I definitely don’t sleep the way I used to. Or, at all, really,” You admitted. “You don’t even want to know how long it’s been since I’ve showered.”
“I can see that,” Sunoo teased, gesturing at the myriad of stains across your shirt. “I like the baby food. It’s a good look on you.”
“Glad to know it’s working on you, jerk,” You said playfully. God, you missed having these guys around.
“Do you want me to take her?” Heeseung asked. The question caught you by surprise. He seemed so easy about it, like it was something he did every day. “You can take a quick shower… if you want.”
“What? No way. You guys are friends, not my babysitters.”
“Not yet,” Niki said, leaning down to coo at Hana’s face.
“Seriously, we don’t mind,” Heeseung insisted.
You bit your lip sheepishly. “Are you sure?”
“Definitely. We’re professionals.” Sunghoon said seriously.
“I mean, we are terrible at music,” Jake added, “But picture books and stuffed animals? I think we got it.”
“Go,” Heeseung insisted softly. “We’re here. Let us help.”
You hesitated. It was such a small thing—showering, putting on a fresh t-shirt—but it felt huge. Like accepting their help would mean finally admitting just how worn out you were.
There was also your protectiveness over Hana, too. You’d never left her with anyone but your parents before. It was why finding a babysitter had become such an ordeal—trusting anyone with your child took an incredible leap of faith.
But then you saw the look in Heeseung’s eyes. The hopeful, almost desperate need to do something for you. He held your gaze, steady, solid.
As if in answer, Hana reached out for him, squirming away from your grasp. She’d always been good with faces, and he was wearing the same jacket he’d worn the first time he came over. She stretched towards the familiarity of his arms and you surrendered, allowing her to climb into them.
“She likes you,” Jungwon said, a big grin on his face.
“Yeah,” Heeseung said, unable to hide the pride in his voice. “I like her, too.”
Seeing her in his arms again brought back the same feeling from before. The one that made you want to see Heeseung with your daughter all the time.
They just looked so… at home together. Like Hana had known him since the start. You hated to admit it, but you were starting to wish that she had.
“All her toys are in there, and there’s snacks in the fridge if she gets fussy. If she gets really upset I’ve got a pacifier in her room—”
Heeseung nodded, the corner of his mouth quirking up at your rambling. “She’ll be great.”
You sighed. “Okay, but if she starts crying—”
“We’ve got it,” Jay reassured you.
Sunoo shot you a wink. “Go on, mama. We’ll look after her.”
You let out a breath you hadn’t realized you’d been holding and slipped down the hall, feeling, for the first time in a long while, that you had people in your corner. It was a good feeling.
——
“She sorta looks like you, Heeseung.”
“Oh, stop teasing him. He’s not gonna let us come back with him next time.”
“You’re so full of it. They don’t look anything alike.”
“She’s got a real Shin Min-a look to her. Old school.”
“She looks like her mom,” Heeseung said, only half-listening to what his idiot friends were debating about.
His attention was mainly on the tiny human balanced on his thighs, her hands tangling in his hair. She was a stout little thing, skin slipping under the slippery fabric of her shirt as he kept a firm grip on her.
A Laker’s jersey. Your guys’ favorite team.
He took a deep breath, trying to steady the emotions rising in him. Just being there—with Hana, with you—it was enough to make him crazy. He tried not to feel dizzy as Hana’s hands moved to his face.
“She missed you,” Jungwon said quietly, fidgeting with a plastic airplane in his lap.
For a second, Heeseung thought he was talking about Hana, but no. He was talking about you.
Heeseung glanced at him. “You think so?”
“You should’ve seen the way she was looking at you when she opened the door.”
Jay snickered at him, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. “Yeah, she was totally checking you out, man.”
Heeseung rolled his eyes. “Shut up.”
“It’s true,” Niki chimed in, tossing a stuffed rabbit at Sunghoon. “Don’t act like you didn’t notice.”
Heeseung just shook his head. “She’s just… It’s been a long time.”
Jay shook his head. “Nah, man. You’re still important to her.”
“It’s obvious,” Sunoo agreed. “If Jay noticed it, it’s real.”
“What’s that supposed to mean!?”
“Well, you’re not the most observant of people, are you?” He said, side-eyeing him.
“That’s rich coming from you.”
Heeseung chuckled, shaking his head. He hoped they were right.
——
The guys started coming around more often after that. They always insisted that they were restless at the dorm and liked having somewhere else to hang out, but you knew it was more than that.
It became something of a tradition to have a big meal at yours at the end of the week, and as time passed, it became easier to rely on them. It felt good to have a kitchen full of noise, a table that wasn’t empty, a house that shook with laughter and music.
They’d bring bags of groceries over and cook these huge, chaotic dinners to share in your dining room. The kitchen was left a mess but they always cleaned up.
Weeks went by and Heeseung stayed behind more and more often, tidying up the rest of the house with you, even helping to put Hana to bed.
Despite your reservations, you liked having him there. You liked the way he’d come through your door unannounced, toting drinks for you and a snack for Hana in his bag. You liked the way he’d get up from the couch when he heard her fussing, and how the others teased him about it in front of you.
“Is that your baby now or what?” Jungwon would laugh, eyes flicking between you and Heeseung with that knowing look.
You’d turn red and Heeseung would just shake his head, smiling.
Even in your hardest moments, he was still showing up for you. Providing you with the comfort and stability that you were trying so hard to give your daughter. You tried to remind yourself not to get too used to his support, but there was no denying it—it was easier to take care of Hana when there was someone taking care of you, too.
“I don’t know what to do,” You sighed, reaching down to pick her back up from her crib. Your phone was tucked between your cheek and your shoulder, Heeseung on the other end of the line. “I’ve tried everything. She just won’t settle.”
His voice came through rough and scratchy with sleep. It was late, and he probably should’ve been asleep hours ago, but you’d started calling each other. A lot. If he wasn’t there in person, he was on your speaker phone, talking to you and keeping Hana entertained.
“Do you wanna try feeding her again?” He asked, yawning.
“I’ve tried. She doesn’t want it. She doesn’t want anything.” You sighed as Hana let out another ear-piercing wail. Her face was red and blotchy from crying. It looked like another all-nighter for you.
“Can you take her to your bed? I think she just doesn’t like being away from you.”
That was certainly true. Hana was getting clingier and clingier these days, spoiled by all her uncles constantly wanting to hold her.
“I can’t, I’m scared that I’ll fall asleep,” You said.
Countless horror stories about parents falling asleep with their babies in their bed had left you anxious to bring her to yours. It was moments like this that you wished her dad was there—that you had someone to take turns staying up with.
“I’ll let you go,” You sighed. “I’m gonna try walking her around the house or something, maybe another bath. Sleep well, okay?”
He hummed as you ended the call, the vibration tickling your ear through the phone. Almost like he was there with you. At least one of you would be able to get some sleep, you thought enviously as you pulled Hana to your chest.
Only, ten minutes later there was a knock at your door.
“Heeseung?” You stared at the man in your doorway. Hana scratched at your face as she wailed up at you. “Are you crazy? What are you doing here?”
He shrugged, smiling as he stepped over the threshold. “Wanted to make sure she was okay,” He said, as if that was a reasonable explanation for showing up at your house at 2 a.m.
“She’s fine,” You said, half-stunned as you shut the door behind him.
Hana let out a disgruntled whine at not having your attention. You raised a brow at her, shaking your head. “You’re such a little drama queen. Look, you’re not even upset anymore.”
It was true. Hana’s cries had slowed to a sniffle as she gazed at Heeseung with wide, glossy eyes. He held a hand out for her to grab onto.
“Had to make sure mom was okay, too,” He said quietly, thumb brushing over her knuckles.
You looked up at him, your chest tightening. His hair was a mess, poking out from under the hood of his sweatshirt. A rush of emotion washed over you at the sight of him, at the dark circles under his eyes, the tired smile on his mouth. The way he was trying—really trying—to be there for you both.
“You didn’t have to,” You mumbled, averting your eyes.
God, even in his most sleep-deprived state he was gorgeous. Eyes burning into yours in the low light. His body hummed with that quiet power that had drawn you to him in the first place—that confidence, that steadfastness. How he seemed perfectly at ease no matter where he was or what he was feeling inside.
Standing next to him, you felt slightly less exhausted. Like simply being around him was enough to energize you.
“I know,” He said softly, “But I wanted to.”
He stepped forward, hands slipping under Hana’s arms with a tenderness that made your heart sting. She let out a giggle as he lifted her up, hands smacking against his chest as he settled her against him.
“She’s always happier with you,” You said quietly. It wasn’t a complaint. Hana really was calmer around Heeseung, and that brought you a sense of peace that you weren’t quite sure how to explain.
He looked at you, his expression softening. “She’s happier when you’re okay,” He murmured. “Come on, let’s try this again.”
Despite his best efforts, Hana was still unhappy in her crib. She clung to his arm as he tried to place her down, voice going up several octaves. You winced at the volume, grateful that you didn’t share walls with your neighbors. They’d have lost their patience hours ago.
Heeseung didn’t seem to mind. He didn’t even flinch as she shrieked, clawing at his hands in frustration. He just scooped her back up, resting her against his shoulder and muttering reassurances over her cries.
You tried for an entire hour—walking her around the house, reading her favorite books and making sure to do all the funny voices, swaddling and unswaddling her, over and over and over. The best luck you had was in your room, like Heeseung had suggested, which both heartened and annoyed you at the same time.
How were you supposed to deny a man with such good instincts?
“You are so dramatic.” You shook your head as Hana hiccupped from your pillow, smiling like she’d never been crying in the first place.
“I wonder where she gets it,” Heeseung said lightly, sitting down on the other side of her.
You tried to stifle a yawn as Hana stretched out, both of your eyes drooping.
Heeseung couldn’t help but smile at the both of you. He’d never met your ex—hadn’t even seen a picture—but he didn’t need to to know that Hana hardly took after him.
Her smile, her mannerisms, that was all you. She was yours, through and through.
“Come here,” He said, pulling Hana closer to him to make space for you to lay next to her.
“I’ll fall asleep,” You protested.
“I know. That’s why I’m here.”
Anyone else, and you would have said no. Anyone but him, and you’d have insisted they leave, resigning yourself to another brutal night of no sleep.
But it was Heeseung. He propped himself up on one elbow, his arm curved over Hana’s head.
You sighed in resignation as you settled in on the other side of her, your hand resting over her stomach gently. His hand came down to brush the hair away from your face. His fingers were soft against your temple, the same gentle touch that you used to love so much.
Anyone else and you would have turned them away, but it was Heeseung, and he watched the two of you sleeping like you were the most precious things to him in the world.
——
When you woke the next morning, the sun was peeking through your window, filtering through your blinds and washing your room in soft, white light.
In front of you, Hana was still sound asleep, her fists clenched by her head. On the other side of her, Heeseung was there. Still on his side, shoulders curved inwards protectively. His arm was still stretched out above you both, his hand resting gently against your hair. He’d fallen asleep that way, holding you both like you were his to care for. His to protect.
And waking up that morning, you realized that maybe you were. Maybe you wanted to be. You slipped out from under his hand, trying not to disturb either of them as you rolled the ache out of your shoulders.
You padded into your kitchen, warm light spilling across the floor. Leaning against the counter, you finally admitted to yourself that you had a problem.
Heeseung was doing it. He was making you believe.
You let out a breath.
The nightly calls, the small gestures, the way Heeseung was there for you, it was working. Are you really falling for this? You thought stubbornly, trying to reason your way out of the way you felt about him. How much of it was real, anyways? And how much had you made up in your desire to have him close? Your mind screamed at you not to trust any of it.
He was an idea. You didn’t need him.
But you wanted him so bad.
Your heart warred against this truth, desperate for something—anything—to convince yourself otherwise. But it wasn’t easy to do. The life he’d painted around you in just under a month was like something out of a dream. One you’d had before the baby, before the breakup, when you still felt like dreams like this had merit.
It was everything you’d ever wanted, and that made you suspicious. What reason did the universe have for giving this to you? When it had been so intent on taking things away?
Your thoughts were interrupted as Hana came crawling into the kitchen, slapping her hands on the cool floor. Heeseung trailed in after, looking exceptionally tired with his hair sticking up in awkward places. He yawned, scooping Hana up with practiced ease and perching her against his chest.
“Hey,” He said, bringing her over to you. “Did you sleep well?”
You took her grabbing hand in yours, kissing a good-morning into her hair. “Thanks to you. You’re so good with her,” You said, trying to keep your voice even. Your stomach was fluttering nervously. “I don’t know how you do it.”
He shrugged, giving her a little bounce that sent her squealing with laughter. “It’s easy. She’s a charmer. Just like her mom.”
Your heart stuttered, and you looked away, fighting the stubborn burn in your chest. Heeseung saw it, though. He always saw it.
“I’m glad I came, y/n. Seriously. I slept great.”
“You slept terribly.”
“Alright, fine, I slept pretty badly, but it was worth it,” He insisted. “And I’d do it again. And again, and again, and again,” He laughed, nuzzling his face into her chest. “Can the guys come over today? Unless you want the day to yourself… I know we’ve been over a lot. I can go home if you want.”
Words could not describe how badly you wanted him to stay. “Yeah, of course. I like having you guys around.”
I like having you around, is what you should have said, but you didn’t have to say it for Heeseung to know what you meant. The smile on his face told you that he understood completely.
It was already the beginning of the end for you when the other members came over and started teasing you both mercilessly. Weeks of hanging out at yours had made them bold—and it was clear that they wanted you to address what was going on between the two of you.
“Should we start packing your room up?” Sunoo asked, side-eyeing you both as he came in.
“You might as well just move in, bro,” Jay said, clapping his hand on Heeseung’s back.
You scoffed. “Yeah right, not until he starts paying rent.”
Jay smirked. “He’d do it.”
“Shut up,” Heeseung mumbled, rolling his eyes.
Their banter might have embarrassed you once, but it felt natural now. The way they spilled into your living room, fighting over who got to hold Hana and which toys she wanted to play with more more—it was hard not to feel like this was how it had always been.
You clung to whatever thin resolve you had left as you watched them all with your daughter. No matter how much you tried not to, your gaze always landed back on Heeseung. The way he lifted Hana into the air, blowing raspberries into her stomach until she was screeching with laughter. The way he handed her off to someone else and insisted on helping you get her lunch ready.
Things between you and Heeseung became… different.
It didn’t fluster you as much when the others teased you for being attached at the hip anymore. And you didn’t mind when he’d sit with his arm slung over the back of the couch, fingers brushing the back of your neck.
For every inch you gave, he seemed to take a mile. Eventually, it became commonplace for him to collapse on the couch right next to you, thigh brushing yours, arm stretched behind your shoulders.
The others stopped asking if Heeseung was leaving with them. They knew he’d choose to stay with you.
“Are you just gonna stand there staring at me all night?” You asked, your back turned as you put your dinner leftovers into the fridge. You could feel his eyes on the back of your neck, sending shivers down your spine.
“Maybe.” He said, “I like watching you.”
“You’re insufferable.”
He smirked, eyes glinting. “You didn’t seem to mind earlier. When I put my arm around you on the couch, you didn’t move.”
Caught.
“That was different,” You managed, keeping your voice even. He didn’t need to know how much of a rise that simple touch had gotten out of you.
“Was it?” His voice was low as he came to lean against the counter beside you, arms crossed. “Felt pretty natural to me.”
Weeks passed and lines got blurrier. He touched you. A lot. Practically couldn’t keep his hands off of you—brushing a strand of hair from your face, a hand on your lower back, a stroke of his thumb against your temple.
By the time you realized it was happening, that you were really, truly falling for him again, it was too late.
Waking up with your head on his chest, Hana curled between you—it was too late.
His arms resting on either side of you against the counter, his chest to your back as Hana sat on top of it—it was too late.
His hand running back through your hair in front of everyone as he tried to find the scar you’d gotten from hitting your head on his dorm door all those years ago—it was too late.
As much as you tried to manage your affinity for him—remind yourself that he had always been friendly, that this was just a passing thing for him while he was bored at home—it was during your weekly dinner as a group that your feelings became impossible to deny any longer.
You were in the kitchen, putting the dishes away when you heard a sharp crash from the other room—the sound of glass breaking.
Your heart skipped as you dropped the bowl you were holding and ran towards the living room. Someone had knocked a cup from the table, the shards spraying across the floor.
Heeseung was on his feet in a second, scooping Hana up away from the broken pieces, stepping away as the others got up.
You paused in the doorway, your breath catching as you watched him. The others stepped around him to clean up, bickering lightly about who was to blame, but Heeseung’s focus never wavered. He murmured something in Hana’s ear, pointing at the broken cup, bouncing her gently as they swept up the shards.
He looked up and caught your eye, and it was suddenly so clear.
You’d been an idiot.
Looking at Heeseung now, it was impossible for you to deny any longer. Heeseung loved you. How had you managed to convince yourself otherwise?
Old grudges rose in the back of your mind—he left you. he left like it was nothing, like everyone else does, and he’s going to do it again—but for the first time, you pushed them away with ease.
They were words.
And what use were words when there you had actions to prove them otherwise?
Something about that moment, the way Heeseung had gone for Hana first, letting the others handle the mess while he made sure she was alright, made your doubts melt away. His first instinct wasn’t to scold whoever had knocked the glass over, or even to help clean it up.
It was to keep your daughter safe.
You spent the rest of the day with a lump in the back of your throat, the awkward ache of all the things you wanted to say to him. He seemed to notice your change in attitude, that something was bothering you, and he stuck even closer than he usually did, stopping to ask you if you were okay multiple times.
“Will you stay behind?” You asked, glancing up at him. “After everyone goes.”
He looked surprised, but nodded. “Of course.”
The others eventually left again, wanting to go out for dinner. Heeseung promised he’d catch up with them but they just rolled their eyes, not believing him for a second.
With the house empty again, it was impossible for you to dance around it anymore.
Hana was down for her nap—eased to sleep by Sunghoon and Jake’s rendition of her favorite bedtime story. Heeseung was leaned against the counter, as if half-expecting you to say something. And your words sat heavy in your throat, aching to come out.
“You don’t know how much it means to me,” You murmured finally, looking up to meet his gaze, “Having you and the others here. I don’t know how I’ll ever make it up to you.”
“You don’t have to make it up to us, y/n. We’re happy to help.”
“No,” You said, shifting uneasily. “I dont know how I’ll make it up… to you.”
His eyes widened slightly, but you went on before he could answer, afraid that if you didn’t talk now, you’d never be able to again.
“I know…” You started, cringing internally at how difficult this was for you. Your feelings were so strong, why was it so hard to explain them? “I know I was harsh on you when you came over the first time. You were being kind, and I got defensive. I’m not proud of how I behaved at all,” You admitted.
“Y/n…”
You stopped him. “Just—let me finish.”
He closed his mouth, but you saw the anxious twitch of his brow.
“You didn’t have to come back. You didn’t owe us anything, not after the way we left things and definitely not after the way I spoke to you. But you did anyways.” You crossed your arms, feeling self-concious. “I didn’t think that I would ever have this again,” You said, gesturing at the things left over from their visit. “I really thought I was going to do this by myself. And that was fine, I’d made my peace with it, but now…”
You paused, your eyes flicking to the picture Hana had drawn with the others—a mess of scribbles that resembled a house, and a group of people standing in front of it. “Now it’s different. And that’s hard for me.”
Heeseung swallowed, as if gathering every ounce of his strength to keep his voice steady. “It’s okay if… if you don’t want me here, y/n.” He held your gaze bravely, but you could tell the idea hurt him. “If this is too much, if you’d rather… I can go—”
“I don’t want you to go.”
He blinked, startled.
“I know I’ve been guarded, and I’ve been pushing you away. But… but seeing you with her, and with me—it’s made me realize how much I’ve missed this. How much I’ve missed you.”
Heeseung’s brow furrowed as if he didn’t quite believe you. You almost smiled. He was so reserved, hands clenched at his sides, braced for what you were going to say.
“I know I talk a big talk but… I don’t want to do this alone, not if you’re willing to be here. Not if you’re willing to… to be with us. I don’t want you to go.”
“You don’t want me to go.” He said it slowly, like he couldn’t quite believe what he was hearing.
You bit your lip, laughing a little bit at the look on his face. “No, I don’t.”
Then, his face broke into a grin. His shoulders dropped and he was stepping towards you, pulling you into his chest like he’d been waiting to do it for years.
And he had. He really had.
His touch was overwhelming. His arms wrapped around you, the heat of his throat warm against your cheek. You buried your face into his neck, breathing in the smell of his cologne and the lingering smell of kid that was all over him. All over both of you.
You pulled away, giddy with nerves and relief. “Happy?”
“Happy,” He breathed. “So… what now?”
“I don’t know… what do you think?”
He quirked his head, lips twisting into a smile. “I think… I’ve been waiting a long time to kiss you again.”
Your heart skipped. “Then what’s stopping you?”
He smiled lazily, like he was half-dreaming, and brushed his nose against yours before pushing his lips onto yours. You melted against him, so happy you could hardly think straight.
Heeseung pushed you back against the counter, his hands on your waist as yours threaded through his hair.
“I was an asshole,” He mumbled against your mouth. “I’m sorry”
You shook your head, breathless beneath his lips. “It doesn’t matter. Not anymore.”
Besides, you thought, that was years ago. And the Heeseung in front of you now was not the same one that had left you behind.
Not by a longshot.

maybank!reader on rafe’s yacht…
you were wrapped in a beach towel that rafe had laid over your shoulders after a dive into the sea, something he’d tried to warn you against with a, “baby, boats are made so you can go on the sea without getting wet.”
crossed legged on the cushioned seats of the yacht, you sat, soaking in the warmth on your dripping skin while you had a bowl of strawberries in your lap. you felt the cushions sink underneath you from the weight of rafe as he laid down next to you, him casually slipping an arm under the towel and around your waist, fingers resting above the waistband of your bikini.
turning towards him, you plucked a strawberry from the bowl, holding it out to his mouth. “what you tryna feed me, now?” he chuckles, glancing down at the strawberry through his sunglasses.
“yeah, do you want it?” you ask, sticking it out further, so it nearly touches his lips. lifting his head off the pillows, he bites into the red fruit, some of the juice dripping down his lips and onto the tips of your fingers. it hardly makes much of a difference to you, though, your fingers are already covered in the pink juice, strawberry leaves stuck to them - what’s one more?
rafe curses under his breath, moving his hand to try and get the liquid spilling down his chin. “ah fuck, did i get it?”
you laugh, grinning down at him as you shake your head, “no, d’you want me to get it for you?” your question is masquerading as genuine, while your intentions are anything but, messy fingers only covering his face in more of the juice. catching on, he starts to try and move his head back, only for you to chase his evasive movements.
“i’m good– baby, i’m good!” he laughs, throwing his head back, trying to get it away from your attack of strawberries.
“no no you have some more ray, i’m just tryna get it off!” you giggle, moving closer until he eventually has you pulled onto him, chest to chest, and your hand fully resting on his cheek.
he almost doesn’t care about how his face is smeared with strawberries, your sticky hand resting on his cheek, grounding yourself as he pulls you into a kiss. grinning through lazy laps of your mouths, his arm still firmly around your waist, towel having slipped off during the fit of laughter.
“you’ve gotta clean me up, y’know?” he murmurs through the kiss, while you just shush him with a finger pressed to his lips, before slipping back in.
-
“rafe can i drive the boat?”
he nearly shoots his head up, looking down at you with slight bewilderment from where you’re laying on his bare chest. “…you wanna drive the boat?”
nodding, you explain, “jj never lets me drive dad’s boat, i swear i won’t crash it!” planting your hands on his chest, pouting up at him with those eyes he’s never been able to resist, rafe nods. besides, anything to be your favourite (over jj).
…
your back is pressed up against his chest while he stands behind you, hands wrapped over yours on the wheel. “alright then, baby, see all you gotta do is steer it a little to the left..” he hums, guiding your hands in the right direction.
the whole time you have the largest smile on your face, beaming with an intensity enough to blind even the sun. tentatively, rafe releases your hands, only giving gentle advice from behind you, his fingers now lingering on your waist. “am i doing it rafe?” you grin, looking over your shoulder at him.
“yeah, pretty girl, you are..” he smiles, leaning down to press a kiss to the side of your head. “a little to the right though baby,” he comments, so you turned the wheel in that direction and lead the boat away from another oncoming one.
“see, absolute natural..you can drive my boat from now on, nevermind ‘bout your dad’s.” it was the type of reassurance rafe’d always give you - don’t worry about your dad, he’d always be there.
-
rafe tied the boat to the port, securing the knot while you tugged his quarter-zip over your head and accepted his help in stepping off onto the boardwalk. arm slung over your shoulders, he and you walked up the planks to tannyhill, rafe spending the entire time engaging in hushed conversation with you, sweet nothings whispered in your ear.
but before you could get to his house, jj and pope were walking back from a drop off they did for heyward, and jj was never going to let you hang out with rafe for too long.
“alright cupcake! you and kook king over there have had too much fun doing god knows what, come on home!” jj calls out to you, hands cupping around his mouth as if to amplify his voice for the hard of hearing condition you always faked to get away from him and his orders.
“jj–” you start to protest, not missing how rafe’s arm tightens around your shoulders.
“no arguments, get over here!”
you glance apologetically up at rafe before murmuring, “sorry..gotta go. today was fun though.”
“yeah? we can do it again, tomorrow?” rafe suggests, brushing your cheek with his thumb.
“tomorrow sounds good,” you smile, tiptoeing to press a kiss to his lips, which he’s quick to return. you don’t even look to see the no doubt repulsed look on jj and pope’s face, keeping your head down as you reluctantly walk away from rafe.
“such a buzzkill jj,” you grumble, brushing past your brother, hugging rafe’s zip up closer to your skin.
“you went on his boat?” is all jj has to ask, marching up behind you, unable to hide the disgust in his voice even if he and rafe are being civil, whatever that means to them.
“he lets me drive it, unlike someone” you quip, earning an exasperated sigh from jj, which makes you break into a grin.
“jesus, i’ll let you drive the boat if it keeps you off his.”
-
(yap : i can’t even tell you how happy this combo makes me - i’ll take every request for them in the world.)

— getting backshots from ex!rafe
warnings — p in v, doggystyle, creampie, unprotected sex, lewd language
the impact is jarring, forceful, driving you forward onto the mattress. your hands slam down flat against the cool sheets, bracing yourself as rafe grips your hips, fingers digging in possessively. there's no preamble, no bullshit, and no wasting time letting you adjust to his large length. just the hard, rhythmic slam of his body against yours. "god, i've missed this pussy."
each thrust is deep, hitting that spot inside you that makes your toes curl and a low groan rumble in your chest. his breath is hot and ragged against the shell of your ear, his grunts syncing with the relentless pace he sets. the headboard knocks against the wall with every powerful thrust, the slapping of skin on skin resounding in the room.
you arch your back instinctively, pushing back against him, meeting his force with your own need. it's wrong, considering the complicated history between you two. but right now, none of that matters. all that exists is the raw friction, the overwhelming sensation of being taken, filled completely.
"ah, rafe…" you gasp out, the name torn from you involuntarily as he hits a particularly sharp angle, sending sparks erupting behind your eyelids.
his hold tightens, knuckles white against your skin. he doesn't answer, just drives into you harder, faster, pushing you closer to the edge. sweat slicks your back, making his grip slide slightly before he readjusts, pulling you impossibly closer, burying himself to the hilt with a guttural sound.
the pressure builds relentlessly inside you, a tight, coiling knot low in your belly. your breath comes in short, sharp pants, vision blurring at the edges. he can feel your climax building, pulsating around his cock so tightly, he knows he’ll savour it forever.
“you’re mine. this needy pussy is mine,” he groans, a rough, strained sound, just as the dam inside you breaks. pleasure floods through you, hot and electric, making your muscles clench violently around him. you cry out, burying your face in the pillows as the waves crash over you, sharp and overwhelming. seconds later, you feel him pull out of you, spilling all his seed along your back, his ragged breathing loud in the otherwise quiet room.
"you’re mine. say it."

EX BOYFRIEND!RAFE

ex boyfriend!rafe who refuses to move on. in his mind, you're still his and he won't let that go. no matter why the two of you split, he doesn't want any other girl. to him, no one comforts him the same, cusses him out when he's being crazy, and he knows no other man will ever come close. still calling you his "princess," picking you up for parties, and showing you off to everyone like you were still dating.
ex boyfriend!rafe still buying you shit—whatever you want, he'll buy it. not because he thinks it'll win you back, he loves seeing you in things that he got for you; makes him feel like he still has some sort of control over you. no other girl would ever receive gifts the way he spoils you—new bags, heels, the finest jewelry, all of it. rafe even had the audacity to gift you a necklace with his initials engraved in it, and knew you were still hooked on him the moment he seen you wear it. rafe especially loves getting your nails done—he chooses the color, length and everything, just to see what looks prettiest wrapped around his cock when he shows up to your house for sex.
ex boyfriend!rafe always lurking wherever you are, almost like he's stalking (even though he won't call it that—he know's he's obsessed). every party you attend, even if he shows to your house unannounced, he's always around. it's no secret how irresistible you'd always been, rafe's blood boiling anytime he fights off other men from trying to speak to you—and if you'd always known anything, it's that rafe didn't care about being violent, if it meant having you to himself then it'd be worth it. watching you flip your hair, giggle as your cheeks flushed and hips swayed in whatever mini dress you wore, appearing silent yet deadly when he'd snaked his arm around your waist like a claim.
ex boyfriend!rafe smug since he knows you won't hesitate to fuck him if he just asks. anytime, any day, you're easy to crack through in his eyes. all he has to do is show up smelling like cedar-wood and whiskey, speaking in that low, rough voice, and that signature, smug smirk he always gave—you'd melt right into his arms, and right onto his dick, like always.
always a quick text saying something like, "let me in pretty girl." even when you roll your eyes, your feet never fail to carry you across the floor. though, you didn't stand a chance anyways—the way he looked at you, smirking as his gaze burned down your figure. "missed me?"
arms crossed, you stared right back into his piercing, ocean colored eyes. "far from it rafe..."
"yeah, yeah, whatever...go upstairs and wait on me."
and you listened.
ex boyfriend!rafe who will always want you at the end of the day. he never misses a birthday, christmas, and even the date of your anniversary. rafe had always been someone you'd depend on. you knew he'd always defend you from creeps, comfort you whenever you weren't feeling your usual self, and you always did the same for him.

“Try me”
summary: your ex might still be hopelessly in love with you. The only problem? He’s crazy:)
a/n: wrote this at 2am and literally had so much fun maybe I’ll do a part two hehe^^

“You want me to beg, sweetheart? I’ll beg. Say the word.” Jason’s voice doesn’t hint at the desperation you can clearly see in his eyes.
He’s in your kitchen again. After he broke up with you. After he left you behind for weeks, wondering if he was even coming back this time. After he did come back with red rimmed eyes and a stubble on his jaw. After he left—over and over and over fucking again.
You cross your arms, despite the way your heart races. He still looks as good as the first day you met him. Though his hair is longer, as if he couldn’t be bothered to cut them off, you usually did that for him anyway. Jason Todd doesn’t know how to take care of himself, it used to be your job. And you loved doing that. You loved… loving him. But you had to stop before your love for him swallowed you whole.
Because Jason Todd is a complicated man. Because you could’ve spent your whole life loving him and it still wouldn’t have been enough to silence the demons that sit in his head.
“It wouldn’t matter.” You tell him, leaning against the kitchen counter. “I’m with someone else now, Jason.” His name is still soft on your tongue, but it doesn’t change anything else. You are with someone else now. Someone who stays. Someone calm and steady and… normal. Someone who works a day job and sleeps in at night. Someone who doesn’t disappear for days. Someone without scars and ghosts. Someone… almost boring.
“Oh please,” Jason’s voice cuts through your thoughts like a knife, “we both know the boyfriend thing is temporary. Let’s stop pretending.” You sigh, you know Jason well enough to know that the swagger he’s showing off is to hide whatever vulnerability he’s feeling at the moment.
“I’m not pretending. I’m very serious, Jason. I’m happy with him.”
Jason steps closer, blue green, glowy eyes fixed on you in a way that used to make your breath catch. It still does. He walks closer and closer until your face almost hits his chest and you have to look up to face him.
“Jas—“
A hand comes up to brush against your cheek. You stiffen. “I miss you,” it’s whispered to you. Jason’s eyes searching your face for something—anything. Gone is the cool guy act, and before you is the Jason you so clearly remember. He’s all soft touches, and teary eyes, lips parted in wonder that he’s not sure this is actually happening. That after everything, he’s touching you again.
“I’m sorry,” another whisper. He leans in until the familiar scent envelopes you whole and you breathe him in like you’ve craved to for so long.
“I’m so sorry, baby. I fucked up. So, so bad. And I don’t know what to do to fix it… I… but I can, okay?” His palm moves to the back of your head when Jason drops his forehead to yours. Your breaths mingling. “God… just… just don’t do this to me.”
He’s so close that for a moment, you almost falter. All others thought float from your brain except the ones your body whispers to you. You could kiss him right now, fill your mouth up with the familiar taste of him. You could—
You won’t. You can’t.
Because Jason isn’t promising you wonders for the first time. You shake your head, pushing him back with a hand on his chest.
“No. No… there’s nothing you can fix. It’s over, Jason. We’re over.”
His jaw clenches, “the fuck we are.”
You stare at him, scoffing. You really can’t believe this guy sometimes.
“What the fuck do you mean by that?”
“You know damn well what I mean!” He yells, hands flying in exasperation. “Look me in the eye and tell me you want this guy! This—this fucking trust fund asshole—what’s his name again? William? Walter? Fucking British twit…” you just stare as Jason rambles on. You can almost smell the hatred and jealousy coming off of him. But more than that, is fear. A silent terror. One that says he’s lost you for good this time.
“Jason—“
“Bet he sleeps through the night, huh? Does he fuck you like I did, baby? Does he make you scream like I did? Does he make you feel good en—“
“Stop it!” Your voice lands, loud and clear and Jason—for once—shuts up. You push both hands through your hair. “Do you hear yourself? This is crazy, Jason! You left me! You refused to step up! You—I loved you! I loved you so much and what did you do with that?! You threw it out the fucking window. You—“
“I know!” His scream cuts through, eyes glassy and red, “I know! You think I don’t wish every single day that I could go back and change things? Stop you? Chase after you and beg for you to fuckin stay with me?! I ruin things—that’s who I am! That’s what I do! But I was wrong. I was so fucking wrong. And you can hate me—you should hate me but god, please don’t push me away. Just say it. Say the word, baby, and I’ll do anything. Anything to win you back.”
You sigh. He is practically begging now, and you can see what the sleepless nights and guilt has done to him. How miserable he looks.
But it’s not your job to fix him. It’s not your job to hold the broken parts together and get yourself cut open in the process.
“There’s nothing you can do.”
You watch the way his expression breaks. Like his chest cracked open, like this will be Jason Todd’s last straw. His breaking point. And you hate yourself for it, but for once, you need to choose yourself.
Jason walks back to the window quietly. His whole stance is rigid and wrecked at the same time. He pauses near the ledge, back turned to you and then, barely a whisper but you hear it loud and clear.
“I’ll kill the fucker.” Your heart drops. You don’t even know if he’s talking to you or himself.
You step forward, eyes wide, heart thumping.
“Jason. No. You won’t.”
His fists clench, the leather jacket creaks with the movement of his shoulders.
“Try me.” He mutters and then he’s jumping out of your fire escape, disappearing into the lifeless, rainy Gotham night.

3K MASTERLIST ♡ RAFE MASTERLIST
there's a theory that claims that men never get over their first love; that they're always going to be thinking about her, dream of her, mumbling her name in their sleep...
and if you wanted to prove said theory wrong, rafe cameron was the wrong person to go to; no matter what the occasion was, he would abandon it all for her if she called; anything for his first love.
you had been dating rafe since sophomore year of high school, starting to go out just days after you moved to the island. your family lived in a small, run-down house on the so-dubbed poor side of the island. even if your family couldn't afford much, they put all the money they had just so you could attend kildare academy.
when you started dating and he finally introduced you to his friends, you could see it in the eyes of every one of rafe's friends; they all looked down on you simply because you didn't come from money. one time while you'd been at a party rafe was hosting, you could hear his friends whisper about you, talking shit. saying how he was probably just dating you because you let him fuck you whenever, or how he pitied you.
that was the first time you two broke up; and a few days after, rafe came knocking at your door with a bouquet of flowers and a well-practiced apology prepared.
after that? you two pretty much became the most notorious on-and-off couple on the whole island. it was like every other week, you and rafe broke up, got back together, and broke up again. one moment, you'd be all over each other; the next moment, you were all over each other in a completely different way. the problem was, as you got older, your situation stayed the same.
you parked your car in front of the house rafe was living in; the bastard had gone and introduced the woman he was dating to your son without asking you, without even saying a word. you slammed your car door closed, your heeled knee-high boots clacking against the concrete.
"rafe!" you shouted, banging the side of your fist against the wooden door, the wreath hung up on the door shaking with the force of your punches "rafe fucking cameron, i need to talk to you!"
rafe pulled opened the door, his jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed, "what the hell do you want now? child support not come through?" the man scoffed and rolled his eyes.
"why the fuck did you introduce some bitch to theo without mentioning it to me?" you pushed him, your ex-husband stumbling backwards, "do you not know common sense? i told you, i don't want you to introduce any of your sluts to him before asking me first."
"you introduced your damn boyfriend to him when i told you not to!"
"rafe, i've told you a million times, will is not my boyfriend; we've been married for a year." you let out an annoyed scoff, "and that's completely different. you told me not to introduce him to a guy i had been with for a year and was getting married to, meanwhile i'm telling you not to introduce him to your third girlfriend of the month."
"can you shut the hell up? i'm not some fucking town bicycle." you followed rafe into the living room, watching as your ex-husband poured whiskey into a glass. you watch as he downs the glass, his adam's apple bobbing as he swallows, continuing to pour more amber liquid into the glass, turning to you, "i'll have you know, sofia and i have been exclusive for three months now."
"well, that's basically as good as marriage when it comes to you." you let out a small scoff, "i don't want you to introduce our son to anyone i don't know, rafe." you grabbed the glass of whiskey from him, downing the liquid, burning as it went down your throat. you slammed the glass onto the tray, pointing a manicured nail at him, your engagement ring and wedding band glimmering under the light. "don't fuck with me. not when it comes to him."
"you're so fuckin' selfish." rafe scoffs, throwing his hands in the air "he's my son too, you have no right to tell me what i can and can't do!"
"i've got a custody agreement that says i do." you narrow your eyes, poking him in the chest, "if you do shit like that again, i'm calling my lawyer."
"you've gotta be kidding me." rafe shook his head in disbelief, a bitter laugh leaving his lips as he brought his face closer to yours, gritting his teeth, "you're gonna try and change our custody agreement because of this? there's no way you're that much of a vindictive bitch."
"you really must not know me," you scoff as you look up at him, your eyes narrowed and your voice low, "because if you did, you'd know that that's exactly how much of a vindictive bitch i am." you stared into each other's eyes, your heavy breaths mingling together. rafe's jaw was clenched, his steely eyes focused on nothing but you.
his lips crashed against yours.
his hands were in your hair, tangled in the strands, tugging on them only to bring you closer to him; his lips were devouring you, a clash of lips, teeth, tongue; and even though you tried to pull away at first, it was like every time he got his hands on you, you melted. every time rafe kissed you, it felt like you were clay and he was molding you into yourself.
your back hit the solid wall behind you, and rafe let out a slight groan when his hands wrapped around under your thighs, and you hopped into his arms, your hands around the back of his neck as rafe held you against the wall. his hands trailed up to cup your ass, the hem of your skirt now all bunched up, your ex gripping the fat of your ass.
rafe carried you into the bedroom you used to share with him like you weighed nothing, dumping you onto the bed and causing your body to bounce on it slightly. grinning up at him, you took your dress off, the blonde looking at your body up and down, cocking his head to the side.
"you wore red?" rafe tsked, referring to the lingerie set you were wearing, a wine-red one, a color you knew rafe loved on you, having ruined many a set while you were together, "you should've just said you wanted to fuck."
you bit your lip when rafe finally took off his shirt, revealing a set of abs you'd caressed, kissed, licked, more times that you could count. his long fingers made work of his belt buckle, swiftly pulling his belt off. he snapped it once before throwing it to the side.
his pants were off, the outline of rafe's hard cock visible through his white calvin kleins. you rubbed your legs together, your nipples hard and straining against your bra. "you gonna come here, or do i need to come and getcha?"
rafe shook his head with a chuckle, and at his words, his body was on yours, grinding against you. a gasp left your lips as you felt his erection against your clothed cunt, and you could feel your arousal starting to form a wet patch in your lacy panties. his lips trailed down your jawline as his hands trailed down the strap of your bra, the man letting out a chuckle against your skin, the words he mumbled against your neck causing vibrations to run down your spine. "let's get this pesky thing off, huh?"
you arched your back off the bed, and rafe's long fingers darted to the clasp of your bra, swiftly unclasping it and throwing it to the floor with the rest of your clothes. within seconds, his lips were on your nipple, licking on the hard bud before his lips wrapped around it, sucking on it in a way that made you to arch into his touch, gasps of pure pleasure leaving your lips.
one of his hands slid into the waistband of your panties, bringing hid middle finger to your clit and pressing on it, making you mewl as your hand found his hair, tugging on it slightly. rafe groaned against your nipple, causing a wave of shivers to run down your spine as his finger lazily rolled around your clit.
"please..." you whined, and rafe let out a small chuckle against your nipple before releasing it with a pop!
his lips started to trail down your body, pressing kisses from between your breasts, down your belly button, continuing all the way until his lips made contact with the waistband of your panties.
"please what?" rafe asked as he started to press kisses on your panty-covered pussy, getting closer and closer to the wet little patch that was now decorating them.
"take them off..." you mewled, your hands grasping the sheets underneath you. rafe pressed a small kiss right over your clit, accompanying it with a teasing lick, before his long fingers finally tightened around the waistband of your panties.
"look at that." rafe huffed in a way that resembled a laugh, and as you looked down, you could see a large patch on the inside of your panties. you scrunched up your nose and looked away, making him let out another chuckle as you hid your face in your hands, "you're so cute when you're embarrassed, baby..." he cooed mockingly, throwing your panties to the side. "there's nothing to be embarrassed about. we both know you get soaked within seconds when it comes to me."
rafe licked a stripe up your slit, making sure to slightly suckle on your clit, a moan leaving your lips, your back arching off the bed you used to share with him. he moved himself up, until his face was over yours. when rafe placed a small, dazing kiss on your lips, you licked your lips, tasting yourself; he always loved doing that; always loved to make it known that only he could have such an effect on you.
the blonde grinned as he tugged his boxers down, gripping the shaft and moving his cock so the tip of it was pressing against your clit, drawing tiiiiny circles of it as if it was another 'funny' game he liked to play with you.
"come on...!" you whined, smacking his shoulders, "i need you..."
"what's wrong, sweetie?" rafe cooed mockingly, cocking his head to the side and narrowing his eyes, "your husband not enough for you?"
your eyes flit to the engagement ring and the wedding band on your ring finger, but the feeling of rafe's cock drawing circles on your needy, throbbing clit, before they looked back into his blue eyes that were mostly overtaken by the black of his pupil.
"please..." you looked at him through your lashes, pouting at rafe. he let out a slight chuckle, moving his shaft down to your entrance, "this what you want?" he asked, pressing a peck on your lips that felt like he was ridiculing you; but your body didn't care; all it cared about was having him inside of it. now.
"yes..." you whispered, "please..."
you felt the mushroom tip of rafe's cock finally enter into you, and even that was enough for a small smile to twitch up your lips; you knew it was pathetic, you knew that this wasn't something you should be doing but "aaaaaaahhhh-" as he sunk his cock deeper into you, you couldn't resist.
and before you were prepared for it, rafe had forced himself all the way into you, the tip of his cock hitting the sweet spot inside of you as you gasped for air, pressing your eyes closed in a way that brought tears to your eyes.
"tell me who you belong to..." he growled, his lips pressed against your neck as he pulled his cock almost entirely out of you, only leaving a tiny bit of it at your entrance.
"rafe..."
"tell me." rafe grabbed your thigh, hoisting your leg up onto his shoulder so he could get even deeper inside of you, "tell me, who you belong to."
"i..." you whisper, your eyes fluttering open, eyelashes wet with tears, "i belong to you, rafe..."
and as he pistoned his cock into you, you couldn't help but throw your head back, your eyes closed, the tears stuck to your lashes ruining your eye makeup.
when rafe's hand slowly made it's way to your pussy, you could tell that he was close; your ex was a sucker for having you both come at the same time. rafe started drawing lazy circles on your clit as he continued to plunge his cock in and out of you, hitting you right where you needed him, and that combined with his thumb on your clit was making the pressure in your abdomen grow, and grow, and grow...
"i'm gonna fuck another baby into you..." rafe mumbled into your ear, "always wanted a big family..." his thrusts grew quicker to the point that you were having a difficult time keeping up with him, "gonna give you a second baby..." his thumb's pace on your clit quickened, "tell me you want it... c'mon, baby..."
your brain wanted to tell him no, but it was as if your heart and your body were in control, every inch of them screaming out the answer that left your lips.
"yes!" you screamed out, "yes, rafe, yes!"
you could feel your cunt clenching around him, moaning out rafe's name as your orgasm washed over you, every part of your body blissed out, until a sense of clarity hit you, and although you tried to shove rafe off you, you couldn't do so, feeling as warm ropes of his thick cum started painting the walls of your slick cunt white.
as rafe got down off his high, he let out a small chuckle as he pulled his cock out of you, the slightly pinkening inches of him soaked in a white mixture of you and him, only for him to shove the cum that was dripping out of you back into you, making you let out another gasp.
rafe laughed as he pulled his fingers out of your hole, bringing them to your mouth. "taste." and you knew; it wasn't a request, it was a command. and so you did.
some moments went by and you were nuzzled in rafe's arms, the both of you content and satisfied as you laid under the blankets, rafe smelling the raspberry-scented shampoo you always wore with a smile on his face; he hoped that your scent would linger; your shampoo, body wash, perfume; he hoped it'd all just... be there, in his bedsheets, forever.
you took the picture frame off the nightstand, and you saw exactly what you were expecting; a picture of you and rafe kissing only moments after you said i do; rafe in his ridiculously expensive tuxedo and you in your custom vera wang wedding dress, your ex-husband having told you that you didn't only deserve the best; you needed it. as you traced the hem of your wedding dress, rafe let out a chuckle, and you couldn't help but turn to him with your brows furrowed, "what?"
"it's just..." rafe brought his hand to rest over yours, his finger right where yours was, trailing your hem, "this kind of reminds me of how i bunched up this dress around your waist a little bit before the wedding..." his icy blue eyes turned to you, "and how i did the same with your most recent wedding dress, and fucked you. what was it you wore to your wedding with will?" he pretended to ponder, "valentino?"
you looked up at him your eyes narrowing, "you can never tell him this happened."
"don't worry, baby." rafe's hand detached from the frame as he cooed mockingly, going to trace your cheekbone with his long, ringed fingers, "i'm sure he can figure it out when your baby ends up looking nothing like him."
♥︎ author's note .ᐟ thinking of writing a fic about rafe and reader on her wedding day... lmk if you want that.

We always get angst with ex husband! Rafe, how about somewhat of a cute(ish) moment. Like dropping your son off at kindergarten for the first time and you’re all sad and he consoles you

dropping off your son for kindergarten with ex!husband!rafe + a bonus part !!!!!
wc: 624 — a/n: i added a little bonus cause it was too hard to resist
you hated this.
you knew it was coming. you had circled the date on the calendar. you had bought the little backpack with his favorite dinosaur on it. you had labeled every damn snack and packed every little change of clothes.
but walking back to the parking lot after dropping your son off at kindergarten for the first time?
yeah. you hated this.
you didn’t even realize rafe was walking next to you until he bumped his shoulder into yours.
“gonna cry or you good?” he asked, that familiar rasp cutting through the lump in your throat.
you glared at him, sniffling. “shut up.”
but it didn’t have any bite. not when your chest was tight like this. not when that tiny classroom door had closed behind the little boy who used to need you for everything.
and rafe — who was usually all sharp grin and cocky remarks — just let you feel it.
didn’t rush you.
didn’t tease you (much).
he just walked next to you in his stupidly expensive hoodie and joggers like some casually hot, accidentally perfect ex-husband.
and when you reached your car, you paused — arms folded, staring at nothing — and he leaned back against the door of his truck, watching you.
“he’s gonna be fine,” rafe said finally. not dismissive. not patronizing. just simple. certain. “he’s a cameron. he’s yours. the kid’s bulletproof.”
you huffed a shaky laugh. “he’s five.”
“yeah,” rafe said, mouth tugging into that little half-smile. “and already smarter than half the guys you date.”
you gave him a look.
“not the time, rafe.”
he held up his hands in mock surrender, but his voice dropped a little softer when he added—
“for real, though. you did good, sweetheart.”
it was stupid how much that hit. how much it mattered coming from him.
and before you could get too emotional (or worse — cry in the damn parking lot) rafe knocked his knuckles gently against your chin.
“c’mon,” he murmured. “you want coffee or somethin’? my treat. call it…ex-husband solidarity.”
you rolled your eyes.
but you didn’t say no.
— bonus part!
you barely made it through the kindergarten pick-up line before rafe was texting you.
rafe: knew it.
rafe: my boy already a teacher’s favorite
you sighed, already bracing yourself.
sure enough — by the time you pulled up to his place for drop-off, he was already outside, leaning cockily against his range rover like this was some big victory.
“see this?” he held up the little note your son’s teacher sent home like it was a damn mvp trophy. “‘polite, helpful, very social.’ i told you. our kid is built different.”
you deadpan him. “did you read the back?”
his grin faltered just barely. flip. oh, there it was:
‘very chatty! we’ll work on using quiet voices during story time :)’
rafe squinted like maybe if he stared hard enough it wouldn’t say that.
“‘chatty’ just means charismatic,” he argued, unbothered. “that’s cameron blood.”
you gave him the look.
“rafe — he told the teacher your job was ‘being rich’ and that my job was ‘finding snacks.’”
rafe absolutely beamed.
“smart kid.”
“rafe.”
“what? accurate.”
but then — and this was the part that always tripped you up — his expression softened just enough. that proud glint never left his blue eyes, but it settled warmer.
“he’s good, y’know,” rafe said quieter, like it mattered to him that you heard it. “he’s happy. means we didn’t screw him up too bad.”
and as much as you wanted to roll your eyes or argue or tell him he was impossible —
that was the thing about rafe cameron.
nobody bragged harder about their kid.
and nobody — nobody — made you feel like more of a team when it came to him.
even if he was your annoying, smug, ex-husband.

Danny: Who was that?
Maddie: That was Bruce. He is an old college friend.
Jack grumbling: He's a worthless piece of trash. That's who he is.
Maddie: Honey, we buried the hatchet with Bruce long ago. You're the only one still mad.
Jack: Of course I'm mad! He broke my best friend's heart!
Danny: What?
Maddie: *sigh* Bruce used to date Vlad, and for the longest time, Vlad convinced himself Bruce was going to propose. Then, out of the blue, Bruce dropped out of college and broke up with Vlad. Two days later, he left the country. Vlad was a mess, which made his accident seven months later even worse, especially when proof of Bruce having a new girlfriend two days BEFORE dumping Vlad came to light.
Jack: I knew he was a punk from the moment I saw him. He defened ghosts! Claim it was inhumane the way we studied them! But I didn't argue with him for Vlad's sake, only to find out he was cheating on my best buddy!
Maddie: Vlad said he let it go years ago, Jack. He found someone else to love. And Bruce apologized and prove those pictures were dotted.
Jack: He lies!
Danny: What do you think Mom?
Maddie: I think Bruce was telling the truth that he never cheated, but I don't think he ever took his relationship with Vlad as seriously as Vlad did. Bruce always felt like he was on the verge of leaving, like there was something restless right under his skin.
Danny: Thats-
Jazz bursting through the front door: OMG I JUST SAW BRUCE WAYNE!
Danny: What?! Where!?
Maddie: Sweetheart he just walked out of our house.
Danny: THAT was Bruce Wayne!? I've heard of him, but I've never seen his picture....wait Vlad, the FRUITLOOP, dated heartthrob playboy philanthropist billionaire Bruce Wayne!?
Jack: I know! Vladdie could do so much better!
Jazz: Literally how!?
#dcxdpdabbles#dcxdp crossover#from a fic i never wrote#Bruce went to talk to them about ghost tech#Vlad is a bitter ex#Bruce regrets how things ended#Danny and Jazz cant wrap their head around the couple#Jack “You wrong my loved one and ill never forget” Fenton#Maddie doesnt know Vlad moved on to her and got stuck

rafe taking care of maybank reader and no one knows that he has a super soft side for her?? he drops off extra food for her and small gifts (clothes.. new phone... money?) one day she suddenly doesn't text and says pass and he finds out she's sick and no one is home to take care of her? (pls?)

rafe taking care of maybank!reader
it was small. a little curse under your breath. poking of your bottom lip out, when your phone died on you for the third time today. poor battery life on your iphone 7 that you’d had for years now.
it was small, but nothing slipped past rafe.
you knew whenever you walked up to him, and he had that ridiculous grin on his face, even in front of jj, that he was up to something. usually it’d be a kiss, the type that’d make jj want to run off and find a bush to puke in. today? a little pink bag. dangling it by the strings, holding it up for you, making eye contact with jj across the road for the briefest moments before back to you.
the box, an image of a pink iphone, was heavy in your hand, causing your jaw to fall. you blinked at it in shock, like it was a figment of your imagination. bound to disappear. a cruel trick.
“well..open it then,” he nudges your shoulder, though you hand stays firmly wrapped around the box. almost unwilling.
“rafe..” you begin, and he tuts, folding his arms across his chest. you give him your “i’m not taking this” look, and he shoots you with his “you don’t have a choice” look.
“your phone’s crap, i know you must’ve saved hard to get it baby, an’ i’m proud but i wanted to get you a new one!”
you bite your lip, turning the box over in your hands. it feels expensive, a limited edition item you don’t even want to unwrap.
“okay don’t think of it as for you! it’s for me, i want to be able to text my girl without her phone dying before she can respond, or her phone cutting off mid-call,” his finger tilts your chin up so you’re staring at his eyes. creased at the corners, brimming with joy. he loves this. loves taking care of you. loves spending his money on you.
“are you sure?” you ask, not wanting to force this on him. the last thing you want is to become one those spoilt kook brats.
“don’t ever ask me that again.”
a squeal escaping your lips, you throw your arms around his neck, giggling when he lifts you in his arms by the waist. “thank you,” you repeat like a mantra, kissing him between each time you say the phrase. rafe only chuckles, holding you tighter.
from across the road, kiara’s pulling jj away from crossing towards you guys, while he faintly yells, “what did that bastard give you?”
there’s rapping on the door to the chateau, and john b groans, throwing his head back as he yells at whoever it is to “go away!”.
then the returned yell of, “open up!”
jj throws his cap onto the table, dramatically exclaiming, “oh for god’s sake! y/n you keep bringing that rat into out house!”
“jj don’t call him that, he’s come with good intentions!” you scold, getting off the couch to answer the door, rafe’s scowl dissipating at the sight of you.
“hey baby,” he drawls, holding out the large takeaway bag you ordered from him, treating him like some personal uber driver; he was more than happy to abide.
“wrap it up!” jj starts shouting, coming to join you guys in the doorway and pausing when he sees the food. jj’s a known sucker for food.
“he got the burgers you like,” you blink innocently up at your older brother. cautiously, as if rafe’s gonna bite him, jj takes the bag from his hand, peeking through and nodding when he does find the burgers.
“thanks man,” jj nods, about to walk off with the food before you call him back.
“hey!”
“hey?” he pokes his head back around the door. pretending to be oblivious wasn’t fooling anyone, certainly not you.
“rafe got the food..so don’t you think he should get to eat the food he bought..?” you ask, slowly, accentuating the fact that rafe bought the food for all of them, himself included.
fishing through the bag, jj pulls out the meal he assumes is rafe’s, based on everyone else’s preferences. “here ya go cameron,” he holds out rafe’s food to him, to which rafe accepts with one of his classic smiles of amusement. “go eat in your car.”
and the door slams shut.
“jj!” you yell, following your brother into the living room where he’s begun dishing out food. pope and cleo are snickering in the corner, sarah pouting for her older brother and john b and kie laughing at jj’s antics.
“what?”
“give me my food.”
“don’t tell me you’re gonna–“ you snatch your food out of his hand, quickly rushing out the house and up to rafe’s car. knocking on the window, you grab his attention, leading him to beckon you in with two fingers. you’re beaming as you climb into the car, settling your food on your lap. “thought i’d join you.”
“was waiting for you to join me,” he chuckles, sipping on his drink.
“thanks for the milkshake,” you grin, a true teenage girl, infatuated with her boyfriend. rafe murmurs a “your welcome” before leaning over to pinch a fry.
“jj forgot to give me my fries,” he says casually, munching on the crinkle cut he just stole.
shifting your food off your lap, you open the door and hop down, “wait here i’ll get it back!” you tell him, running off back inside the house, ever so eager.
“oh wait wait!”
you pause by the chateau door.
“steal his fries too!”
you burst into giggles, but nod anyways, running out the house a minute later with two loads of fries and an annoyed jj.
yet another casual slip of the tongue. “god i wish jellycats weren’t so expensive,” you muttered, upright in rafe’s bed as he slept, a heavy arm draped over your waist.
you didn’t notice his eye peek open, the subtle glance he took at the giraffe on your screen, labelled ‘back in stock’, priced £45.
he could afford that.
he ordered it the first moment he could. once you had dozed off and he could discreetly turn his phone on. you had rambled to him on more than one occasion on how fast certain things can get sold, so he chose not to risk his luck buying the ‘rolie polie giraffe’ by prolonging it for more than he needed to.
purchased!
another night, the parcel’s been tucked under his bed for a few hours, waiting for the right moment. then he sets it on your lap, drawing your attention from the movie on the tv infront of you to the blue plastic.
you let out a small gasp.
the jellycat logo is written everywhere on the outside. you don’t even care which one it is. you didn’t even think he knew you wanted this stuff. but when you open it? and your dream jellycat is in there? rafe’s attacked with an onslaught of kisses.
“how did you know?” you ask, pressing a kiss to his cheek as he chuckles through the whole thing.
“saw it on your phone,” he grins, puckering his lips for another kiss you’re more than happy to give.
“i love you,” you smile, elated.
“d’you love the teddy more?” he asks, giving you a pointed look.
“maybe…but i’ll name her after you? so it’s basically loving you more..?” you giggle, rafe rolling his eyes but accepting his fate anyways, pulling you towards him with an “i love you too.”
“oh my god! she’s sick, okay?” jj throws his hands up at rafe, annoyed with the man whose been pestering him at his job for the past half an hour to figure out why you haven’t been texting him back. jj returns to his mowing, while rafe runs back to his car, starting the engine and immediately driving to the chateau.
when he knocks, he’s saddened to see you answer the door, wrapped in blankets, nose red. “hey rafe,” you sniffle, rubbing your eye with the back of your hand. he moves to step over the threshold only for you to try and push the door closed.
“hey baby– what? what are you doing?”
“don’t! you’ll get a cold! get back out!”
“baby–“
“out, rafe!” you shoo, not opening the door again until he stepped back. it was a mistake, however, because the moment you opened the door fully again he darted forwards, past you and kicking the door shut behind him.
“rafe,” you groan, cut short by a sneeze.
“awh baby,” he brushes back your hair, guiding you back into your room. settling you down on the bed, he empties out the contents of his bag. medicine. soup. one of the many jellycats you keep at his place.
“don’t you have work?” you murmur, accepting the medicine he holds out to you.
“wonderful thing about owning a company princess, days off whenever you want,” he sighs, sitting down next to you on the bed, pulling you into his chest.
“you’re gonna get sick,” you say, cuddling into him.
“well, you’re not doing much to stop that anymore are you?” he chuckles glancing down at your snuggled form against him. you simply shrug, and rafe shakes his head, settling back with you.

Everyone, this is my first Oscar Piastri post and my first SMAU post, so please treat me as fragile little baby 😂
Requests are open and well appreciated
Shy Cat Who?
Oscar Piastri x Actress!Reader

She was the controversial ex-WAG. He was the shy cat of McLaren. But together? They were the storm media hadn’t expected.
F1 75 Event was the most awaited event of the Formula One world. Drivers and new liveries sprinkled with a bit of glitz and glamour. But no one expected the cameras to catch a face no one thought would be seen in the F1 circles again.
Warnings: Max and Kelly slander (see, I love them both sooo much, but for the sake of the plot), fluff, internet hate towards reader, she is a famous actress and is part of Stranger Things and her character’s name is ‘Kat’ and knows archery, fluffy, use of ‘slur’ and ‘whore’ once. I guess that’s it.
The flashes of the paparazzi cameras came in rapid bursts—sharp and relentless, much like the corners of the track he was so familiar with. But unlike the adrenaline of a race, the weight of expectation tonight settled far heavier on his shoulders than ever before.
Oscar was the quiet one—the calm, reserved McLaren driver who rarely made headlines outside the track. In stark contrast, his teammate was loud, charming, and unapologetically extroverted—the kind of personality that drew fans and critics in equal measure. Lately, the latter group had grown louder, branding Lando a “playboy” for reasons Oscar never cared to dissect.
Drama had never been Oscar’s brand. He was the steady hand, the focused mind, the last person anyone would expect to stir the media into a frenzy.
So when he stepped onto the F1 75 event carpet with a well-known actress on his arm—someone with a turbulent history involving the current world champion—the world paused. For a split second, even the cameras hesitated. Then the chaos erupted: flashes exploded, questions flew, and voices rose in a desperate bid to make sense of the unexpected.
His hand rested gently on the small of her back, the silk of her white dress soft beneath his rough, calloused fingers. Subtle, comforting circles traced against her spine—his silent message to her that he was here, steady and unshaken. She looked poised, even radiant—she had likely faced this kind of attention more times than he had taken to the grid.
But he knew this wasn’t just another appearance for her.
Because they would be here.
Because the past had a way of resurfacing.
And because no one—not the media, not the fans, not even the critics—had expected her to return to this world after the scandal that shattered her once-golden image.
“Are you alright?”
Oscar blinked, dragging his gaze away from the blinding barrage of camera flashes. His smile softened as it landed on the woman beside him—her lips curved in quiet encouragement, her eyes glimmering with concern that reached deep into him, melting away the stiffness in his posture. His hand shifted from the small of her back to wrap securely around her waist, drawing her closer as he leaned down and whispered with a teasing lilt, “Shouldn’t I be the one asking that?”
She laughed—a full, uninhibited sound that echoed like music across the cold marble of the entrance. Her head tilted back, eyes crinkling at the corners, catching the lights of the flashing cameras and reflecting them like a million tiny stars. Oscar, the ever-composed Aussie driver, would usually be wary of such attention. In any other moment, he would’ve steered her quickly into the venue, avoiding the scrutiny. But here and now, watching her laugh so freely, he forgot everything but her.
The whispers of criticism waiting online, the haunting pieces of her past, the quiet insecurities that clung to him like shadows—all of it dissolved the instant she leaned into him, instinctively seeking his warmth as a cold gust teased at her hair. He welcomed the closeness, pressing a soft kiss to her temple in a gesture no camera could cheapen.
“Let’s go inside,” he murmured, his arm loosening around her waist only to slip his hand into hers. Her fingers fit against his with practiced ease, the kind that comes only from months spent in secrecy—shared meals under dim lights, whispered conversations behind closed doors, fleeting touches exchanged like promises.
The world saw her now—the poise, the grace, the way she smiled up at him like he was the very air she breathed.
But only he had seen the broken pieces beneath.
Only he had held her through the nights she couldn’t sleep.
Only he knew the shape of the wounds left behind by the man who now stood at the pinnacle of the sport.
And tonight, for the first time, they were stepping into the light. Together.
Sinking into the plush mattress of the hotel room felt like heaven to Oscar. After hours beneath the hot glare of camera flashes and the overwhelming buzz of voices and attention, the stillness was a balm. He didn’t mind the fans—he loved them, truly—but this, the quiet, the dim light, the comforting weight of a smaller body curling instinctively into his side… this was where he felt most at home.
He looked down, a soft smile tugging at his lips as he took her in. She had showered too, her face now free of the makeup, glamour, and practiced poise that the world always demanded of her. In this room, she wasn’t the headline-grabbing actress or the woman people whispered about in scandal-heavy tones. She was just his. The woman he loved—not despite everything the world had said, but because of everything she was beneath it.
“What are you doing, baby?” he asked, brow slightly furrowed as he noticed her focused on her phone. It was rare. When they were together like this, their phones usually stayed untouched, traded for quiet conversations, kisses, and the rhythm of shared silence.
She hummed in response, glancing up at him with a mischievous grin. Without a word, she turned the phone toward him. Oscar matched her smile, but as his eyes scanned the screen, his expression shifted to one of surprise—quickly softened by amusement.
He raised a brow. “Are you sure?” he asked, voice low and curious, one hand moving to lazily twirl the ends of her hair—something he always found himself doing when she was near and he was at peace.
“I wouldn’t have come today if I wasn’t,” she replied, voice gentle, sure. Then, she leaned up and kissed the edge of his jaw—slow, grounding—before asking the same question back, eyes gleaming with something deeper than simple mischief.
Oscar chuckled, the sound warm in the quiet room, before flipping them over in one smooth motion. Her surprised squeal was followed by laughter, the kind that came from deep inside—the kind only she could coax out of him. She swatted at his shoulder in playful protest as he hovered over her, the shadows dancing across the contours of his face.
“I’ve never been more sure of anything,” he whispered, brushing a kiss to the corner of her mouth. She smiled into it, her breath mixing with his.
Reaching for her phone, he glanced at the screen again—her Instagram app open, a carefully chosen photo of them from the event tonight waiting to go live. His thumb hovered over the ‘post’ icon. For a second, he hesitated—not out of doubt, but reverence.
He looked back at her, wordless.
She met his gaze, her smile answering questions he hadn’t even asked.
And without another moment’s pause, he pressed ‘post.’

emergency contact | park sunghoon x reader
prompt: weeks after your breakup, sunghoon finds out that he’s still your emergency contact. pairing: non-idol sunghoon x implied female reader genre: angst with hopeful/happy? ending; second chance romance??; exes to lovers??? word count: 2800 note: i’ve had a cute fic idea that i wanted to write forever…but this is not it. the sad demons have visited me once again. hope y’all enjoy nevertheless and any feedback is much appreciated <3
sunghoon was miserable.
it had been three weeks, five days, two hours, and thirty-two minutes since the two of you had gone no contact.
he wished he could say he was happy to be single, that he was no longer “locked down” and “whipped” as his friends had always called him. but the so-called “freedom” felt like hell since it meant losing you.
at first, he kept telling himself that time would heal the pain. “it’s natural,” he had repeated like a mantra, “she was your best friend and lover for years.” but no, this heartbreak was inhumane. his desire to see you, apologize endlessly, and spend days holding you until you could feel every ounce of his love was gnawing at his soul. if anything, it got worse by the minute.
he had tried so hard to balance work and the rest of his life, using the excuse several times that he was securing this future for your shared life with him. that one day, you’d be able to reap the rewards of his efforts and live comfortably together without stress.
but what was the use of all of that now? the future he had worked so hard to create was ripped out from his hands by no one other than himself.
you had accused him of being too busy for you. dates canceled at the last minute, a birthday forgotten, and all the texts left on read had built up to the argument that ended it all. he was always good at fighting, a little too good. he had retorted that you weren’t being supportive, and he was never one to sugarcoat his words. his tongue was sharp, and he did nothing to dull its blade.
but there wasn’t too much yelling on your part, and he thought that that hurt more. he wanted you to fight back, to stand your ground because he knew deep down that he was being the asshole. his toxic thought was that by you fighting back, this meant that you were still fighting for your relationship. but instead, you just stared with silent tears and a blank expression. seeing the indifference in eyes that had previously held so much love was a sight that would stay with him forever. so, in fear of you leaving, he ran instead.
he was a coward, leaving your shared home to run back to the apartment he had still technically owned but hadn’t lived in for more than a year. he locked himself away for a few days, but the realization that you hadn’t attempted to contact him burned more than he could put into words. you were done with him. he had hurt you, had the audacity to be the one to run, and now he had lost you.
he had even run from his job. he couldn’t stand to walk into the same building he stayed in when he forgot dates with you. his coworkers wouldn’t stop asking what happened to him, why he looked so rough. he even found an empty container that had once held lunch you made for him. but his final straw was getting promoted. his first instinct was to call you, but he remembered the sad truth before he could dial. any ounce of pride was washed away with shame in that moment. that same day, he quit without notice.
so there he was: miserable, alone, and unemployed with nothing left to run from but memories. he had spent the last week going through his phone and saving your pictures together in a locked album. he wouldn’t dare delete them, but he couldn’t stomach looking at you either.
he wished he could get drunk and sleep away the pain. he had tried, he definitely did - but that night, he dreamt of you. you were smiling at first, eyes ever full of love. you were speaking, yet he couldn’t hear you. but he could see how your words started to gradually look sadder, and slowly, tears started to fall as your grin dropped. he woke up that next morning crying with the conclusion that he would have to face this heartbreak sober.
but another day of scrolling through albums had stopped abruptly when he saw the notification that changed everything.
SOS i called emergency services from this approximate location after my watch detected a hard fall. you are receiving this message because i have you listed as my emergency contact.
sunghoon had to remind himself to breathe.
he had purchased that watch for you as a “just because” present months ago. you had complained of bad sleep and he wanted you to use it as a way to track your slumber. he hated seeing you tired. he knew that the watch had a fall detection function, but it had never been used before.
his heart was in his stomach as he went to his favorite contacts page and selected your name for the first time in weeks.
“please,” he begged, all notion of running away from you leaving his brain, “pick up please.”
but you just weren’t answering. so he tried again and again and again.
for a moment while the line attempted to connect, he wondered if this was how he had made you feel for months - desperate for a sliver of attention from him. but instead, he was desperate for a sign of life.
finally, after about two minutes of trying to reach you, his body moved of its own accord. before he knew it, his car keys were in his hands and he was out the door.
the car ride there might have been the worst part. the speed at which he drove at almost defied the laws of physics. other drivers were cursing at him but he wasn’t registering anything except the thought of your safety. he just needed to get to you.
why did he run? why didn’t he try to talk it out? if he was so afraid of losing you, why did he do the one thing that would guarantee that? he should have been there like he promised to be from the beginning. you would have been safe with him.
when he pulled up to the house you had shared for so long, he suddenly felt the world slow down. why were emergency services there? you should’ve canceled them by now.
he had to double park as the ambulance was blocking the driveway. why were they here?
the emts and police had arrived at the same time as him, which both increased his anxiety and soothed him. for one, that meant he had been quick enough. but why did you need them?
“sir, do you know–” an officer had approached him as he stumbled to the front door. all he could understand was your name. why were they asking if he knew you? of course he knew you. you, the love of his life. you, his soulmate by every meaning of the word. you were you. and you were safe.
as if sensing his distress, he felt an emt worker pull him to the side as the same officer prepared to break down the door. seeing this, sunghoon finally returned to his senses.
“w-wait! sorry, i have a key.” sunghoon’s hands were shaking. the only way that door had unlocked was by pure muscle memory because he didn’t understand what he was doing at all.
as soon as the door opened, sunghoon tried to step in. finally, he was close to you.
the officer, however, pulled him back.
“sir, you should wait here. we need to make an initial search before you can go in.”
“what, why? if she’s in there, i want to see–”
“sir, it’s just in case we find something we wouldn’t want you to see.”
all of sunghoon’s hesitation and fear went out the window at those words. his body flew automatically as he ran inside.
he screamed your name as he rushed in, ignoring the yells of the police officers who followed him in. as it had been for almost four weeks, his only thought was you. he just needed you.
he checked the ground floor first, eyes scanning the open space in less than a second as his body avoided an officer trying to grab him. sunghoon then moved to the staircase, long legs prepared to skip steps to reach you. then suddenly, he heard the voice his ears had been longing for,
“sunghoon?!”
his head shot up. there you were, finally. he saw the sadness, confusion, and fear all flash your face as you registered the emergency workers behind him. you looked exhausted and unruly, but he had never felt more in love.
he didn’t even remember climbing the steps, but suddenly he was at the top of the staircase and you were in his arms.
you could feel him trembling as he held you. you took his face into your hands to look at him, “sunghoon? what’s wrong? why are you here? is it my parents? is someone hurt?” you watched as his mouth opened but no words came out. after a few seconds, one of the officers spoke from the bottom of the steps,
“ma’am, we received an alert from your device that a hard fall had occurred.”
suddenly, you understood everything. taking sunghoon’s hand gently, you led him down the stairs, afraid he’d fall from shock. he followed you silently, but his grip tightened seemingly with every step.
that’s when you noticed your shattered watch on the third step.
you let sunghoon go and you could hear his deep breath when you did. you picked up the watch and offered it up to the officer as an explanation, “i’m sorry officer, it looks like there’s been a misunderstanding…”
the officer nodded in understanding, and dismissed the emts, “got it, ma’am. we will still need a formal report for our records since this was registered as an emergency call.” he motioned to your couch as he took out a pen and paper.
you reached for sunghoon’s hand once more and led him to sit with you. in the moment, you knew he needed you more than you would ever understand. so, as you explained to the officer, you held his trembling hand, rubbing soothing circles with your thumb.
“i was doing laundry here downstairs and had taken off my watch to prevent it from getting wet,” you recounted, “i put it on top of the basket of clothes that i took upstairs. i remember tripping a little going up the stairs - i didn’t fall, but that must’ve been when the watch fell."
"what about your phone, where is it? i'm sure your boyfriend must've tried to call you."
sunghoon slowly nodded at that, turning to look at you. you smiled sheepishly, "i left it upstairs and it was on silent while i folded the clothes. i’m so sorry for the inconvenience.”
after finishing up your statement, the remaining officer prepared to leave. as he walked out the door, he gave a soft smile to the both of you,
“glad to see it was a false alarm, ma’am. you had this gentleman quite worried - ran so fast i couldn’t even grab him!” the officer laughed, “you two have a nice day now! sorry about your watch, though!”
after he shut your door, the silence enveloped your home. you closed your eyes and breathed deeply to prepare to speak to your ex-boyfriend. but as soon as you opened them, sunghoon started to cry softly.
he hugged you tighter than he ever had, and soon enough, his face was buried in your neck. his cries were silent, but you could feel his body shaking as his tears soaked your shirt.
“sunghoon…” you started, stroking his back, “i’m sorry i worried you, honey.”
you knew you shouldn’t be calling your ex pet names, especially an ex that had run from you without properly ending the relationship. but your heart still held so much love for him that it flowed out naturally. and you knew he was crying from more than just worry, so you doubt he minded at all in the moment.
his crying slowed down as his arms took to loosely wrapping around your waist instead. he pulled away from your neck to rest his forehead on yours. from this angle, you could see his swollen eyes and red nose - a sight so rare in all the years you had dated. he was never a crier after all.
but memories of several late-night conversations rushed your mind. he always said his number one fear was your death, and now you could see he had never lied about that.
he could see your mind go elsewhere so he called your name softly, “don’t say you’re sorry. i’m so happy, these are relieved tears. and i just really, really missed you.” he croaked out. you knew he had more to say, so you just nodded, letting him go on.
“and i’m sorry, baby. for everything. i shouldn’t have run, i shouldn’t have tried to egg you on to fight me back. i shouldn’t have even fought anything you said that night. you were right. i didn’t prioritize you. in my attempt to secure you for life, i let you go instead. i’m so sorry, i never wanted to break up.” he was rambling in earnest now, afraid that no words would make you take him back.
you listened quietly as he went on for a few minutes after that, hand continuing to rub his back, “i know honey, i know.”
“baby, you need to understand that i almost died thinking you almost died today,” you could’ve laughed at how dramatically he spoke, “i couldn’t breathe right thinking that our last conversation could’ve been an argument. that you wouldn't have ever known just how deeply i love you and need you. i have so much regret for how i treated you, but if you’d give me the chance, i have all the time in the world to make it up to you…let’s go on that vacation i promised you. we can leave tomorrow if you’d like.” he smiled hopefully at you.
“hoon,” his heart soared at the use of his beloved nickname, “what do you mean? don’t you have work? can you really leave with such short notice?”
“i quit my job.”
“excuse me?”
“no job that made me work that much is worth it. i’ll find one with better work-life balance…after our vacation. if that’s what you still want of course…” he spoke more quietly, as if afraid of rejection.
you sighed. you really should be realistic with this - you two had been broken up for a few weeks at that point. you knew the love was still there, but was this a good decision?
while there was still some hesitation on your part, you couldn't help but notice how gingerly he held you. his arms were still around your waist loosely, yet there was something desperate about their hold. you knew he was holding back from hurting you - you could tell how tightly he wanted to hug you.
he was so shaken up at the idea of you being hurt that he rushed over there despite the two of you not being on speaking terms. for someone who had trouble communicating how he felt sometimes, you knew his actions spoke louder than words. he always acted brave, but there was so much he feared. and you knew losing you was always at the top of this list.
you could also feel how he was simply soaking in the sight of your face. his eyes were shy, yet determined. he wasn't going to risk missing another second of staring at you. a part of you grew conscious, but you knew he was just taking in what he had missed for weeks.
“what about…” you started and almost giggled at how he perked up, “we take it slow - another two weeks or so to talk everything out and relax? to get us to a good place again before you hold me hostage in some foreign country?”
sunghoon smiled softly, kissing your forehead. you leaned in naturally to his warmth, to his touch that you missed so much. “that sounds like a great idea, love.” he spoke, “we’ll get you a new watch too. and i’ll do all the itinerary planning and packing whenever you’re ready, okay? i love you.”
“okay. and i love you too. can’t wait to enjoy your unemployment with you for now!”
one smile and nod from you had him taking you into his arms once more, relishing in your being. he was back where he belonged. he had experienced the scariest reminder ever that he needed you, and sunghoon was never letting you go now.
